2-1. What is Hatenohama?
Hatenohama is a long, narrow, uninhabited island located on the east side of Kumejima Island, a unique place where the entire island is made up of sandy beaches. The sea that stretches out before you is truly deserving of the word "emerald blue." It boasts some of the clearest waters in the Orient, and the clear scenery stretches as far as the eye can see.
The total length is approximately 7 km, and the beaches are called Maine Beach (front beach), Nakano Beach (middle beach), and Okuno Beach (back beach) or Hateno Beach, which is the furthest beach from the island. Most tours take a boat to Nakano Beach, but there are also tours that go to the furthest beach.
Although it's a pristine white sand beach with not a single tree, this island was actually formed from coral. The white sand is actually "coral sand." Bleached coral, crushed seashells, star sand, sun sand, and even fragments of sea urchin shells and calcareous algae such as cactus grass have accumulated over many years to form this sandy beach.
The resulting geological formations are called "coral sand cays," and they are extremely rare in Japan and valuable worldwide.

During peak seasons, advance reservations are often required. While it may be possible to make reservations the day before or on the day of your visit even during off-peak seasons, booking early is recommended to make scheduling easier.

3-1. Kumejima Power Spot! Mifuga
Mifuga, a formation of two rocks standing side-by-side, is one of Kumejima's most representative tourist spots. "Mifuga" means "woman" in the local dialect, and it is also known as "Woman Rock." These unusual rock formations, said to have been created over 4 million years ago, tell us about how the volcanic island of Kumejima came into being.
Mifugar is unique in that the landward side is made up of volcanic rocks and ash accumulated by volcanic eruptions, while the seaward side is formed from limestone created by coral and other materials that solidified over long periods of time. The rocks, which are formed from different geological formations, are joined together in a single structure. This rare landscape, where rocks of different geological types appear to be connected, truly seems like a miracle created by nature.
Because of its mystical appearance, Mifugar is also known as a power spot. Following its name, which means "woman's rock," there is an old legend that says "if a woman who is unable to conceive prays to the rock, her wish will be granted."

3-2. The Garden of the Gods!? The Great Cycad of Une
Cycads are commonly seen in Okinawa and Kyushu, but one that deserves special attention is the "Une Cycad" located on the grounds of the Kikumura family home. Its size is said to be the largest in Ryukyu, and it exudes an overwhelming presence that is impressive at first sight.
The trees are estimated to be around 250 to 300 years old, with trunks measuring 4m and 6m in length. Their appearance, nurtured over many years, evokes a sense of history. Nearby is the "Maja no Chura Fukugi" (Maja's Beautiful Lucky Tree), which can be visited along with the other trees. Both are designated as natural monuments by Okinawa Prefecture.
The magnificent cycad tree, carefully preserved by the Kikumura family for generations, presents an impressive sight that you'll definitely want to capture in photographs. However, although it's a tourist spot featured in guidebooks, it's still located on private property, so please be sure to observe proper etiquette and appreciate it quietly when you visit.

3-3. The cracks are magnificent! Tatami stone
The "Tatamiishi" rock formations, often described as works of art created by nature, were designated a national natural monument in 26 as "Tatamiishi of Oujima Island, Kumejima Town." Located on the east side of Kumejima Island, this scenic spot is spread across Oujima Island, a small island accessible by bridge. Further east of Oujima Island lies Oha Island, beyond which stretches the white sand beach of "Hatenohama."
Tatamiishi are rocks formed during the cooling and solidification of lava, and more than 1,000 rocks are lined up, each resembling a turtle's shell. They vary in size, but the largest can reach about 2 meters in diameter, and are also called "turtle shell rocks" because of their appearance.
This unique shape is the result of a phenomenon called "columnar jointing," where regular cracks form as the rock cools. It is a type of landform created by volcanic activity and is considered a rare landscape worldwide. Similar landforms can be seen at Chikushimori Dike in Akita Prefecture, Tojinbo in Fukui Prefecture, and Keya-Omon in Fukuoka Prefecture, all of which are known as natural monuments.
At low tide, the Tatami-ishi rock formations become more visible, and you can actually walk on them. Small tide pools form all over the rocks, and if you look closely, you might see tiny fish swimming around. When you visit, be sure to check the tides and try to go at low tide.

3-4. Must-see spot! Ghost Hill *Don't worry, there are no ghosts.
To reveal the secret right away... this "Ghost Hill" is a spot where you can have a mysterious experience caused by an optical illusion called the "longitudinal gradient illusion."
Here, a strange phenomenon occurs: what appears to be a downhill slope is actually an uphill slope. The incline at the top of the slope and the way the surrounding trees grow confuse the visual system, preventing the brain from correctly judging the true incline, making the uphill slope appear as a downhill slope.
If you visit this place, you should definitely try an "experiment." Recommended items to bring are things that roll, such as balls or plastic bottles. If you place them on a slope, you'll see movements that will make you say "Huh?" in surprise. If you film it with your smartphone or on video, you can enjoy watching it again later.
There are tourist information signs at the site, so anyone can easily experience it by following the directions. As a slightly mysterious side trip unique to Kumejima, be sure to enjoy this "mysterious" experience.

3-5. Japan's Machu Picchu! Uegusuku Castle Ruins
Known as the place on Kumejima Island where you can enjoy the most spectacular views is Uegusukudake, the ruins of a castle built during the Ryukyu Kingdom era. At an altitude of approximately 310m, it is said to be the highest gusuku (castle ruins) in Okinawa Prefecture.
Standing at the summit, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Kumejima Island. Not only can you see the beautiful white sand of Hatenohama Beach, but on a clear day you can also see the surrounding islands and even Okinawa Main Island in the distance, making it truly a prime spot to overlook the island.

3-6. Experience history and faith. The mysterious "Yajagama Cave"
Located about 10 minutes by car from Kumejima Airport, Yajagama Cave, nestled quietly amidst a tranquil rural landscape, is one of Kumejima's most mystical spots. As you descend underground along the wooden boardwalk, a large cave surrounded by a lush forest appears, a stark contrast to the tranquil impression of the island. The scenery that unfolds before you feels as if you've wandered into the world of an adventure story.
The cave is a limestone cavern that stretches for approximately 800 meters, and the interior is completely dark as sunlight cannot reach it. As you proceed relying on the light of your flashlight, stalactites rising from the ceiling and columns of Ryukyu limestone formed over long periods of time will appear one after another. Erosion is still ongoing, and the sight of the rock faces shining like jewels in the light of water droplets is breathtaking. You can experience the timelessness that nature has accumulated over the centuries.
The caves are home to a unique ecosystem. Furthermore, they have a history of being used as a human settlement, burial ground, and air raid shelter, and traces of that time, such as seashells and human bones, remain. The way nature and human activity intertwine is a major attraction.

For those with some extra time, we recommend taking the town bus. 6. How to get to Kumejima
There are two ways to get to Kumejima: by air and by sea.
If you're traveling to Kumejima by air, the basic route involves a layover at Naha Airport. The flight between Naha and Kumejima takes approximately 30-35 minutes, with 7-8 flights operating year-round.
On the other hand, direct flights are only available seasonally, with one round trip per day between Haneda and Kumejima during the summer holiday period each year.
The Naha-Kumejima route is operated by a JAL-affiliated airline (either RAC or JTA), so please pay attention to the connection time with your connecting flight.
Additionally, the sea route between Okinawa Main Island and Kume Island will be served by ferries from Naha, and a high-speed boat (Ocean Jet) scheduled to begin service in May 2026 will depart from and arrive at both Naha and Motobu. The journey time is 50-70 minutes by high-speed boat, approximately 3 hours by ferry, and approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes if traveling via Tonaki Island.
Naha's Tomari Port, where ferries depart and arrive, is about a 15-30 minute drive from Naha Airport and about a 10 minute walk from Miebashi Station on the Yui Rail.
