Cape Kiyan

Cape Kiyan

This cape is located in the south of Okinawa Island at Itoman-shi, which is the site of the National Park where the Battle of Okinawa took place. It is the southernmost point of Okinawa island and is famous for the fierce battle fought here in World War 2. At the dawn of the Battle of Okinawa, the pursued Japanese soldiers or civilians involved committed suicide or jumped off of a cliff to avoid giving their lives to the enemy. There is a peace monument tower built here in remembrance of that. It is a major tourist attraction, as there are a lot of sights around that are dedicated to WWII, such as Himeyuri Tower and Heiwa Memorial Park.
Cape Kiyan is a 30 meter tall cliff and the panorama of the blue sea unfolds before you. This cliff is a border between the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. This place surrounded by three seas, also hosts the remains of Gushikawa Castle, designated as a National Historical Site.
Itoman is home to a boat race called "Uminchu no Mura", and the Kyan Eisa festival, which is held in order to pray for safe fishing and marine traffic. These events attract a lot of visitors all year round.

 Access

From Naha Airport it is approximately 15.85 km, or 24 minutes. 11.68 km from "Tomigusuku/Nakachi IC" (17 minutes). Please take care, as the roads are narrow and only one vehicle at a time can pass.
