About the Shiraho Coral Reef Conservation and Research Centre

The Shiraho Coral Reef Conservation and Research Centre is a facility that was established by the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) in 2000 with help from donations from many people. The facility is located in Okinawa Prefecture’s Yaeyama Islands, specifically Ishigaki Island, and exists for the purpose of protecting the surrounding coral reefs.
Ishigaki Island and the surrounding Shiraho sea are inhabited by over 120 types of coral and over 300 types of fish. The island is home to a large colony of blue coral, said to be the world’s largest. This colony of blue coral is the oldest known living coral in the Northern Hemisphere and as such the organisms and environment here are both very precious. Due to this the WWF has made efforts to preserve and protect this ecosystem and works together with the people of the region to advance their research.
At the Research Centre there is a wide variety of materials on display that will help you to learn about the environment of Ishigaki. Every week there is a Shiraho Sunday Market that is held where you can try and buy local cuisine and vegetables as well as traditional handmade everyday articles. When you visit you will definitely come to appreciate how the people of the island live in harmony with nature.

Access

From within Ishigaki City you can take a taxi which is the most convenient way. The nearest bus stop is the "Shiraho Elementary School" bus stop, which is about 30 minutes from the city’s bus terminal. From within Ishigaki City, to get there by car take Japan National Route 390 headed in the Shiraho direction, turn right at the Shiraho Post Office, and it is right near the ocean.
