This shrine is known as "the place to go for Hatsumode (first shrine visit of the year) in Okinawa," and it is bustling with many worshippers every year during the New Year's season. It is a very familiar shrine to the people of Okinawa, where people pray for things like family safety, protection from evil, safe childbirth, and business prosperity.

It is also known as a power spot for matchmaking, and recently, "Shrine Kon," a matchmaking event held at the shrine, has become a hot topic, making it a popular place to find a good partner.

Originally established in 11 as "Shokonsha" (a shrine dedicated to the war dead), it was renamed "Okinawa Prefecture Gokoku Shrine" in 14. Beyond the two large torii gates lies a bright shrine grounds with a distinctly Okinawan atmosphere. Naminoue Shrine, built on a cliff overlooking the sea, is filled with refreshing sea breezes and the scent of the ocean, making you feel as if your soul is being cleansed.

The founding year of Naminoue Shrine is unknown, but this place overlooking the blue sea has long been cherished by people as a sacred site where they prayed for safe sea voyages. It is said that the King of Ryukyu also visited the shrine during the New Year to pray for the peace and prosperity of the nation. The shrine was damaged during the Battle of Okinawa but was rebuilt after the war. The enshrined deities include Izanami-no-Mikoto, Hayatamao-no-Mikoto, and Kotosakao-no-Mikoto.

After passing through the "first torii gate" and walking along the path lined with votive tablets, as you stand before the "shrine building and second torii gate" surrounded by lush green trees, the dignified atmosphere naturally makes you straighten your posture.

It is said that the shrine's origins date back to around 1768, when Yoshimasa Takaesu, a pioneer who moved to the Awase area, found a sacred stone floating on the sea surface, brought it back, and enshrined it as the "Bijuru God." It is especially known as a god of fertility (childbearing and child-rearing), and is also believed to bring blessings for good health, safe travels, and traffic safety.
