With its beautiful azure sea and its abundant nature, it goes without saying that Okinawa is a treasure trove for spiritual power-spots. Since you are going to Okinawa anyway, there is simply no reason you should not power-up during your travels!

1. Okinawa Prefecture Gokoku Shrine | Naha City, Ounoyama

The most visited either by foot or by car rentals during Okinawa travels would have to be the “Okinawa Prefecture Gokoku Shrine” located inside the Ounoyama Park.

As a shrine reputed to be “be-all and end-all for Okinawa’s hatsumode (first shrine visit in a new year)“, it attracts many visitors during the new years annually. For praying for family safety, warding off evil, safe births and blessing businesses, it is a very near and very familiar shrine for the people of Okinawa.

It is also famous for being a power-spot for marriages, and with the recent fad of marriages being held in shrines this place has also accumulated popularity as “as a location that will bless you with good marriage candidate.”

[History]
Built in Meiji 11 as a “Shoukonsha” (Shinto shrine dedicated to the martyred dead of war), it received its new name of “Okinawa Prefecture Gokoku Shrine” in Meiji 14. Though it was damaged by war due to the extremely intense land battles during the Battle of Okinawa, it overcame adversity and its inner sanctuary and main hall of worship was rebuilt at Meiji 40. It pays homage and enshrines the spirits of those who martyred themselves for Japan during the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars and onwards.

This is a calm place where peaceful winds breeze silently to the point that it makes you wonder if it is really placed in the center of the ever-busy Ounoyama Park. The temple grounds, surrounded by such lively greenery, is coupled with tropical pine trees giving it a proper Okinawan aesthetic. Truly this is a spot where you will want to go for a relaxing stroll while wishing for world peace.

[The Protective Charms of the Gokoku Shrine]
As a charm for marriage, the “Enmusubi Kaimori” is said to be the one with the most powerful effect.
Based on the ancient Japanese saying of “Awabi no Kai no Kataomoi”, which refers to a one-sided love, it is believed that the second charm embodies romantic reciprocation, thus bringing in marriage and happiness.

And these charms, with their flower embroideries and contrasting colors, are a hearty recommendation for couples to have.

There are also other charms so adorable as to make you want to hold onto them tightly, such as the “Kaiun and Shofuku” charms designed with the faces of the 12 Zodiac animals, as well as the “Kodomomamori” charm appropriate for celebrating births.

2. Naminoue Shrine｜Naha City, Wakasa

Even from the beginning, “Naminoue Shrine” attracted many visitors from not only inside and outside of the prefecture but also those from other countries. It is affectionately known as “Nanmin-san” by the locals.

As its main revenue it offers benediction services such as for family safety, the flourishing of businesses, safety when traveling, and good matchmaking; many families can also be seen praying for safe births and simply paying their respects with a shrine visit.

Through the two large Torii shrine pillars are the bright temple premises with its Okiwanan-esque atmosphere. With a fresh sea wind and the scent of the waves breezing through, Naminoue Shrine, atop a cliff that pushes out into the sea, feels as if cleanses you all the way to your heart.

[History]
Though it is unclear when exactly Naminoue Shrine was founded, this place that overlooks the azure sea had been taken care by the people in ancient times as a holy site to pray for the safety of ship routes. It was said that at New Years, even the king of the Ryukyu kingdom visited and prayed for the peace and prosperity of his nation. Though it sustained damages due to the Battle of the Okinawa, it was rebuilt after the War. Its enshrined deities are Izanami-no-mikoto, Hayatama-no-mikoto and Kotosakao-no-mikoto.

The completely red hall of worship that stands in the skyline of Okinawa is located within the temple premises that draws all eyes to it with its beauty. Its enshrined Shisa statues, a staple of Okinawan temples, are also poised as if they are guarding the shrine. And if you take commemorative photos on the ancient Okinawan attire photo props, we are sure that it will be a fun travel memory to look back on!

3. Awase Bijuru｜Naha City, Awase

Though there are many locations in Okinawa that are considered “Kodakara spots”, “Awase Bijuru” is famous for being a location that sees heavy commercial traffic even amongst them.

Awase Bijuru, located in a quiet residential district, is a place that is taken care of and protected from ancient times as a holy site, and even now many visitors from inside and outside the prefecture come by to pray.

It is said if you pass through the “Ichinotorii”, walk the temple shrine paths lined with Ema plaques and stand in front of the “Shinto shrine, Ninotorii”, you will naturally get taller at the cold and frigid air.

[History]
Around the year 1768, the settler Yoshimasa Takaesu brought home a miraculous stone he found floating on the sea, and it is said that the start of the shrine’s history was when he enshrined the stone as “Bijuru-kami”. In the Okinawan language, the word “Bijuru” means “a stone worthy of worship”. It is especially known as a god of easy childbirths (conceptions and child raising), and you will be able to receive blessings of sound health, safety in travels and safety in roads.

Because it is the preeminent god of childbirths it receives many visitors looking to pray for conceptions, child-raising and safe births; due to that, it is a shrine that is somehow filled with an atmosphere of happiness. The majority of the Ema wood plaques hung along the shrine-path are prayers for the safe and healthy growth of chidlren. After finishing your visit to the shrine, your heart will be touched by a warm power.

[The Protective Charms of Bijuru]
As befits a god of childbirths, there are charms available that are adorable and in gentle colors. Especially popular are the “conception charms” designed with a cute mouse that is said to bring many children and the “safe childbirth charms” that are designed with a dog that is said to be the embodiment of safe childbirths. It is said that the blessings will double if both are carried by husband and wife.

Another recommendation would be “conception charms” that uses natural stones blessed by the miraculous stone of Awase Bijuru as talismans.

Other than those, you can also enjoy “matchmaking charms” that are done in Okinawan-eqsue Bingata designs and patterns.
