A new shop has joined the ranks of the traditional pottery shops on Tsuboya Yachimun Street in Naha.
On Friday, October 10, 2025, Tsuboya-yaki pottery studio Ikutouen (Representative: Wakana Takasue) will have its grand opening of its sixth store, "Tsuboya no Iriguchi," following a soft opening in August.

"Tsuboya no Iriguchi" is located at the entrance to Yachimun Street, as its name suggests.
Under the theme of "Connecting the scenery of Tsuboya with the scenery of Okinawa," a wide range of items will be on display, including pottery from Ikutouen, as well as crafts, food products, miscellaneous goods, and cosmetics that utilize Okinawan materials and techniques.

To commemorate the opening, they will be selling MONPE (traditional Okinawan trousers) dyed with Okinawan clay and red tile powder, as well as original "Tsuboya no Keshiki" (Tsuboya Scenery) tenugui (traditional Japanese hand towels) created by designers and illustrators who have been involved with Ikutouen for many years. The second floor space will also host pop-ups and workshops featuring artisans and brands from within and outside the prefecture.

Ikutouen Pottery has walked hand in hand with the town of Tsuboya.

Tsuboya ware boasts a history of over 300 years. Ikutouen, a pottery studio deeply rooted in Tsuboya, carries on this tradition to this day.
In 1963, Ikuo Takasue founded "Takasue Pottery," and in 1988, he opened "Ikutoen Main Store" on Tsuboya Yachimun Street. Through pottery and Shisa statues, they have been promoting the charm of "yachimun" pottery that thrives in the Tsuboya region.

It all started with "gumaguwa," a shop opened along the street in the space of an electrical appliance store run by a relative that had closed down. Since then, small connections have continued to accumulate, and now the business has expanded to include a workshop and six unique shops and workshops in Tsuboya.

Our approach to creating our shop is about connecting the memories and landscape of Tsuboya to the future, preserving the scenery of Tsuboya while continuing to create new things that are in tune with the times.

The town of Tsuboya is not only a town of pottery, but also the starting point of Okinawa's post-war reconstruction.
This town is still a vibrant place where the resilient and adaptable way of life and daily routines of the Okinawan people thrive.
The Yachimun pottery produced here is not merely a vessel, but a culture in itself, a culmination of the land's memories and the activities of its people.
Especially over the past 20 years, we have been constantly thinking about "what to preserve and what to pass on to the next generation" amidst the changing landscape of Tsuboya.
"Tsuboya no Iriguchi" aims to be a small but reliable beacon of light in a landscape that is gradually disappearing.
I hope this can be a catalyst for connecting scenery and sensibilities, from Tsuboya to Okinawa, and from Okinawa to other lands.

"Tsuboya no Iriguchi" is a new establishment located on Tsuboya Yachimun Street.
It seems that a new connection between Okinawa's "scenery" and "craftsmanship" will spread from this place.
