Located within the Tomari Fishing Port in Naha City's Minato-machi district, "Tomari Iyumachi" is a popular tourist spot where you can enjoy the bounty of Okinawa's sea.
"Iyu" means fish in the Okinawan dialect, and "machi" means market. This fish market is popular with locals and is bustling with activity every day.

1. Located next to the fishing port! Fresh fish are lined up inside the market.

The market is lined with 24 fish shops and specialty stores, offering a wide variety of seafood that has been landed every morning. Colorful Okinawan fish such as parrotfish, grouper, and red snapper are particularly eye-catching.

There are many Okinawan fish with names unfamiliar on the mainland, making it exciting just to browse. Some shops also sell seafood from outside the prefecture, such as fresh oysters and scallops.

Fish for sashimi is sold in blocks. If your accommodation has a kitchenette, buying a block and enjoying a leisurely meal in your room is a great and affordable option.

Of course, they have sashimi, and a wide variety of prepared foods, which you can eat in the eat-in area on the premises.


At the back of the facility, there's a "Tuna Cutting Room" that you can view through a glass partition. If you're lucky, you might even get to see a spectacular tuna cutting show!

Approximately 7% of the fish handled at Tomari Iyumachi is tuna. Because Okinawa has tuna fishing grounds in its nearby waters, you can enjoy "fresh tuna" that hasn't been thawed.

As I walked around the facility, I was able to see people preparing the fish that had been caught.
Since the selection of products decreases after lunchtime, it is recommended to visit in the morning.

2. Enjoy the gourmet food available on-site! Cafeteria and eat-in spaces

After enjoying the lively atmosphere of the market, be sure to treat yourself to some delicious food!
The building houses a restaurant called "Maguroya Mikagan," where you can enjoy popular dishes such as tuna bowls, salmon bowls, and seafood bowls. They also have a wide selection of side dishes including tempura, fried shrimp, lobster, and king crab.

When I visited around 10:30 AM, it was still relatively empty, but by 11:00 AM it was almost full. It gets crowded around lunchtime, so I recommend arriving a little earlier. Opening hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM (last order at 3:00 PM). There are both table and counter seats, and it has a welcoming atmosphere, making it easy to drop in even if you're alone.

While few stores have their own dining areas, there is a shared eat-in space available within the venue.

Near the entrance, there's also a shop selling Okinawan souvenirs and processed goods. You can find items that make great souvenirs, such as locally produced mozuku seaweed, tuna tsukudani (simmered tuna), and Orion beer T-shirts.

3. Business Hours, Access, and Parking

"Tomari Iyumachi" is open from 7:00 to 17:00. However, popular items like sashimi and fresh fish often sell out by midday, so it's best to visit early!
While the entire Tomari Iyumachi area is open year-round, some shops may have irregular closing days, so it's best to check their official websites in advance if you have a specific shop in mind.

Located about 15 minutes by car from Naha Airport and about 10 minutes from downtown Naha, it's easily accessible for tourists. A large free parking lot is available.
