~A Middle-Aged Photographer's Island Stroll~ Cafe Hopping: "Tasokare Coffee" Edition

Tasokare coffeeHi there!
I'm Sato, a middle-aged photographer living in Naha City.

Let me begin by introducing myself...
I was born in Morioka in northern Tohoku, and I worked diligently there for 30 years before retiring.

I packed everything I needed for my life into a small minivan and landed in Okinawa with nothing but the clothes on my back in June 2016. This year marks my second year living here.

I'm finally starting to get a feel for the island's geography, and lately I've become very interested in finding delicious local food and unique items.

So, this time I went to "Tasokare Coffee," a place I've always wanted to visit whenever I passed by it!

1. This is what "Tasokare Coffee" is like.

Tasokare coffeeIt's a 5-minute walk along the river from Yui Rail Miebashi Station.
Tucked away on a quiet, sparsely populated alley is "Tasokare Coffee."

The exterior of "Tasokare Coffee" is very simple.
In front of the shop, there are potted plants, a bench, a small table and chairs,
If it weren't for the sign that reads "-Home-Roasted- Tasokare Coffee," you might wonder what kind of shop this is.

Tasokare coffeeLet's go inside.

With its high ceilings and simple, undecorated interior, the owner's favorite jazz music plays from JBL speakers, and you're greeted by the fragrant aroma of coffee.

There are three seats at the counter on the left, one four-seater table, two two-seater tables, and a two-seater sofa at the back of the cozy shop. There's also a corner selling original accessories next to the entrance.

Tasokare coffeeOn the front wall are a photo collection by Gregory Colbert, a favorite of the owner, and LP covers of Tempalay albums.

This jacket, casually placed on the shelf, is actually a very rare record from the first limited edition release.

The owner said, "You're the second person to ask about this record"... I got the second spot!

You can pick up and look at the Gregory photo book next to it if you ask the owner. Enjoy a delicious cup of coffee while immersing yourself in Gregory's world.

Tasokare coffeeIn the back right corner, you'll find an antique coffee grinder and a small framed flower arrangement.
This interior design also conveys the owner's preference for hand-cranked operation over machine-driven equipment.

2. Enjoy a carefully prepared curry that's good for your body.

Everything on the menu is handmade, one dish at a time. It might take a little while, but please be patient and wait.

This time, I ordered curry rice topped with a fried egg.Tasokare coffeeThe curry, served on a wooden plate, is vibrantly colored.
This curry is a keema curry made from scratch using Okinawan pork loin and plenty of vegetables, along with a blend of spices. It has a rich flavor while keeping the oil content low, making it a healthy choice.

The rice is lemon rice made with naturally grown brown rice from Kumamoto.
This curry has a thick, rich consistency and is packed with chunks of meat. It's more like a dry curry than a typical curry. The meat is well-cooked and well-seasoned with spices.

The combination of lemon rice and the runny yolk of the fried egg is a perfect harmony!
When ordering curry rice, don't forget to add a fried egg on top!
The pickled carrots served as a side dish had just the right amount of acidity, making it a very satisfying plate.Tasokare coffeeMy after-meal coffee has arrived. It's in a cute coffee cup.
Apparently, this cup was purchased from "Tou Yokariyo" in Tsuboya, Naha City.

The coffee has a pleasant bitterness, but it's not overpowering, so it might be best enjoyed with sweets or other desserts rather than on its own.

While not listed on the regular menu, there are also some special dishes available from time to time.Tasokare coffeeShikikan (Japanese citrus fruit) cake (350 yen).
This is a firm sponge cake packed with walnuts.

In addition, they also had a tartine of locally produced pork and roasted bell peppers stewed in wine (850 yen).Tasokare coffeeThese menus are posted in the window, so be sure to check them out when you visit the restaurant!

Also, if you order a cafe latte...Tasokare coffeeThe barista will create latte art for you.
In the background of the photo are rusks made from leftover bread crusts from making sandwiches. These fragrant, crispy rusks are a hidden gem and a popular item.
