1. Head towards Moriya and follow the village road.

I heard a rumor about a delicious soba restaurant called Moriyoshiya, so I decided to go and check it out. I drove north on National Route 58, passed the "Kyoda Interchange Entrance," and turned right at the traffic light that I could see below the overpass on the right.

Then, a scene unfolds that evokes a sense of nostalgia, a quintessential Okinawan landscape. The road is narrow and appears to be a local thoroughfare, marked by a "slow down" sign. We proceed slowly through the village.

2. Inside Moriya

Moriya's interior is divided into areas with counter and table seating and areas with tatami mat seating.

The tatami seating area has an atmosphere reminiscent of a traditional Okinawan house. The Okinawan soba enjoyed here is sure to taste even better, thanks to the wonderful ambiance!

I initially thought it might have been renovated, but after talking to the owner, it turned out they had actually rebuilt it. However, what surprised me was that they didn't just rebuild it; they had worked on it themselves for about three years.

The greenery surrounding the shop and its wooden construction create a gentle atmosphere. The occasional breeze that passes through the shop makes you feel at ease.

3. I'll try the popular menu item, "Shuraya Soba"!

Moriya offers a classic lineup of Okinawan soba, soki soba, tebichi soba, and Moriya soba. What's distinctive is their commitment to "not using chemical seasonings."

"I wonder what kind of soba it will be?" I wondered excitedly as I chose the popular "Shuraya Soba," which allows you to enjoy pork belly and spare ribs together.

The soup, fragrant with bonito broth, has a light flavor and a refreshing finish. The thick, flat, curly noodles have a firm texture and the soup clings to them perfectly, making them easy to slurp down.

Apparently, the noodles are handmade and homemade, which shows their strong passion for soba making. The pork ribs and pork belly, which easily fall off the bone, are lightly seasoned but without any meaty smell, and the flavor brings out the best of the ingredients.

When you've eaten about half, adding the provided julienned ginger enhances the original flavor even more. Overall, it's a light yet satisfying bowl of soba, with a comforting, gentle taste.

Final thoughts

Moriyoshiya's soba noodles have a gentle flavor, and even immediately after finishing them, you'll find yourself thinking, "I want to come back and eat this again."
They only prepare about 30 meals on weekdays and about 50 on weekends. It's recommended to go early if you plan to visit.
