Cornerstone of Peace

Cornerstone commemorating the Battle of Okinawa, 240,000 names engraved

The Cornerstone of Peace is located in Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Park. During World War II, Okinawa became involved in the ground war and many lives were lost, soldiers and residents. The Cornerstone of Peace commemorates the Battle of Okinawa and has over 240,000 people’s names engraved that lost their lives in the war. These names are of soldiers, residents and all others that lost their lives, regardless of their nationality. The memorial was erected with three philosophies: To remember those that were lost and pray for peace, pass on the lessons of war, and to provide a place for learning. In addition, in the park’s square there is a peace fire that burns combining the fire collected at Okinawa Zamamison, "Light of Peace" from Hiroshima Prefecture, which was devastated by the atomic bomb, and Nagasaki Prefecture’s "Fire of Oath".
