Helios Distillery

Awamori is a representable alcohol from Okinawa. A lot of awamori brands are distillated here but it used to be a distillery for rum which is one of the World Four Liquor. Rum is made from sugar cane. Sugar cane is a major product of Okinawa; in 1961, this distillery started producing rum from gathering material which is very rare in the country. The rum, produced here, is made from local sugar cane and has a lot of fans all over the country.
The distillery is about 50 years old. It operates under the concept of "tradition, material and production technique blended with fresh ideas", creating "delicious liquors". Every novelty and know-how in brewing is applied at this distillery. Currently, the distillery produces wide range of products, such as rum, awamori, shochu, liquor, habu-shu (with a habu snake inside) and sake vinegar. For example, the habu-shu produced here is called "Uruma"; this is the brand that invented habu-shu. Okinawa-grown purple yam used as one if the ingredient while brewing shochu, which is also highly popular among visitors.
You can tour the main brewery, headquartered in Nago. In one hour, you can have a look of the brewing facilities, take pictures in the yard and try local branded alcohol. Entrance is free. There is a gift shop where you can buy souvenirs. You can do walk-in but we recommend making reservation in advance.
On Naha’s International Street, European style "Helios Pub" provided beer straight from the brewery and the restaurant Ryukyu cuisine offered "momogami" sake. You can try fresh beer from the brewery, old and rare liqueurs and enjoy the food made with local ingredients. On weekends, they have shimauta live performances, group reservations can be made.
If you visit Okinawa, you should definitely get to know those local cuisines. Enjoy local food and listen to live performances while visiting Helios Distillery. It will definitely add some flavor to your trip.
