About Shuri Ryusen

It represents Okinawa traditional craft Bingata, first mentioned in the 15th century literature, it has been recognized as representative traditional craft of Ryukyu Ocho.

During Ryukyu period, Bingata used to be exclusively for the royalty, which also used the costume for "Welcome Dance" when Chinese envoy paid a visit. Common people were allowed to wear Bingata only for special occasion. It can be made on different fabric such as cotton, hemp, Basho, silk and the legendary fabric, Donban. Those divided in use of different class and usage. On the other hand, around 20 different patterns are applied, depending on the society class. For example, Yellow can only be used for royalty female ceremonial dress; light blue and Asaji can be used for daily clothing. Also, massive pattern such as Ryu (Dragon), and Hou O (Phoenix) can be only used for the royal family. The larger the society, the higher class is. But when people become old they used small pattern instead.

Bingata represents Ryukyu distinctive tradition, however, most of the tools and pattern paper got burned after WWI and WWII. Okinawa dyeing industry merchant "Bingatasouke" who served the royal family did their best to keep this tradition. Although there was lack of material after wars Bingata charm still remains the same.

Shuri Ryusen is a workshop which brings and improves Bingata, the culture of Ryukyu Dynasty, back to present. The incredible technological skill used on classic and modern design. Not only for clothing, different design and pattern applied on variety items. Other than Bingata, Sango dyeing course can be participant here and you can take your work back home as a souvenir. The traditional culture Bingata which spread from the past can make your journey much more colorful.
