Shinkaichi in Kin Town is an area that was originally a temple town in front of Gate 1 of the U.S. military base Camp Hansen, and is mainly home to restaurants and bars.
The faded paint and peeling walls are adorned with old-fashioned snack bar signs and neon alphabet letters, creating a unique world that feels both American and reminiscent of the Showa era.
With its abundance of bars and pubs, the area exudes a certain allure, making it a deep and unique area that's quite different from typical tourist spots.
This article will cover the townscape of Shinkaichi, its famous taco rice, and information on access and parking!

1. Just like America! The streets of Shinkaichi

One of Shinkaichi's greatest attractions is its streetscape. English signs are everywhere. Combined with the nearby Camp Hansen military base, it feels as if you've stumbled into America.

It's commonplace to see foreigners walking around, and it feels like stepping into a Western movie.

However, even though we simply say "America," it's characterized by a retro atmosphere. Dilapidated buildings exude a sense of melancholy, and there's also a somewhat mysterious feeling to it.

This unique atmosphere is what makes Shinkaichi special. Its deep, off-the-beaten-path vibe is completely different from typical tourist spots, making every stroll through the town an exciting experience.

In fact, that kind of streetscape has even appeared in a BTS music video. The first minute of the music video for "LET GO," released in 2018, was filmed in Shinkaichi, and you can see a few tourists there on a pilgrimage to the filming location.

On the other hand, one of the interesting things about Shinkaichi is that amidst the American-style shops, there are also shops catering to locals.

As night falls, neon lights illuminate the area, and people flock to bars, clubs, and other establishments. Fridays and Saturdays are particularly lively, and on payday (the 1st and 15th of each month), the area is bustling with many people associated with the U.S. military base.

It's hard to describe in a single word, and it's difficult to put into words, but for some reason, it's captivating. It's a place where you can feel that deep, chaotic atmosphere.
2. Kintaco and GATE1, long-established taco rice restaurants in Shinkaichi.
The townscape is charming, but you shouldn't miss "Taco Rice," an Okinawan soul food that originated in Shinkaichi. In fact, Taco Rice, a representative of Okinawa's casual cuisine, was born right here in Shinkaichi.

King Taco Rice, or "Kintaco," is a renowned taco rice restaurant representing Okinawa. It's a long-established restaurant that's popular with locals.

The taco rice is piled high with ingredients, so much so that you might find yourself saying, "I'm so full..." and giving up, making it perfect for lunch or a late-night snack.

"GATE1," like King Tacos, is a restaurant that has helped build the taco rice culture in Shinkaichi. It is located in front of Gate 1 of Camp Hansen, a U.S. military base.

The combination of sweet and savory meat, finely grated cheese, and crisp lettuce is perfectly balanced. This dish is also quite filling, so it's recommended to go with an empty stomach.

3. Access and Parking in Shinkaichi
Shinkaichi is about a 1 hour and 30 minute drive from Naha Airport. Head north on National Route 329, and the area is directly across from Gate 1 of the U.S. military base Camp Hansen.
The nearest parking lot is "Kinbu Active Park".

However, it's not uncommon for the parking lot to be full. Also, it's located in an alley, the road is somewhat narrow, and there are many one-way streets in the surrounding area, so it's a good idea to check the location carefully beforehand.
If the parking lot is full, we recommend the Kin Town Public Parking Lot located just before Camp Hansen Gate 1.

Final thoughts
