Gesashi Bay Mangrove Forest + Higashi Village Fureai Mangrove Park

Gesashi Bay is located in Higashi Village, a town known as the "town of flowers, water, and pineapples," situated in the northern part of the main island.

Higashimura Fureai Hirugi Park is famous for its mangrove forest that stretches along the lower reaches of the Gesashi River!
Okinawa's largest mangrove forest contains three types of mangroves: *Rhizophora stylosa*, *Bruguiera gymnorrhiza*, and *Rhizophora stylosa*. However, because it contains a rare species of mangrove, it has been designated a national natural monument.

Incidentally, mangroves are tropical and subtropical trees that grow only in places where saltwater and freshwater mix.

At Higashimura Fureai Hirugi Park, located within the mangrove forest of Kesaji, you can admire mangroves, which are extremely rare in Okinawa, and various other creatures also inhabit the area.

There are well-maintained walking paths, so you can enjoy a pleasant stroll surrounded by mangrove forests – that's one of its charms!

Among the creatures found here, the most commonly seen is the fiddler crab.

Males have one claw (pincer) that is about the same size as their shell (females have both pincers that are small), so you can easily distinguish between males and females. Be sure to look for them!
They're often found walking around the base of mangrove trees. If you observe carefully, one might suddenly appear!

Other creatures you can see include fiddler crabs, kingfishers, and birds such as the intermediate egret.

And at low tide, it's teeming with mudskippers!
There are places where you can go down to the lower level, so I think children in particular will enjoy it.

Miyako Island has many places known as limestone caves because its geology consists of coral reefs, which are composed of limestone.
Among them, the Bora district has a limestone cave that can only be accessed at low tide.

The main way to get there is by sea, as it is located underwater.

Banna Park

Mount Banna (elevation 230m), located on Ishigaki Island, is no ordinary mountain.
It's a beloved subtropical forest park among the islanders, but it's also a place that tourists should definitely visit.

Rent a car and enjoy a comfortable drive along well-maintained winding roads!
There are plenty of places to stop along the way, so spending a whole day in the mountains is definitely an option!

Banna Park is broadly divided into zones A through E.
Zone AThis is "Banna Forest and Relaxation Square," a large open space where you can have picnics and other activities.

In Zone B , the Banna Skyline road traverses the mountains, and surrounding it are forests designated for environmental conservation.

C ZoneCentered around Ishigaki Dam, there are plenty of places to enjoy, such as a crested serpent eagle observation deck, waterfowl watching, and forest walks!
It feels great to lie down on the grass in the open field!

As you can see, it's possible to walk all the way around Mount Banna, and a major feature of this trail is that it can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from children to the elderly.

From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Ishigaki Island, and on a clear day, you can see the incredibly beautiful ocean.

Also, across the road from the observation deck on the southern island, there's some kind of unusual monument.

This is an observation deck called the "Migratory Bird Observation Post." Inside the hole, there's a spiral staircase, and once you reach the top, you'll be rewarded with a spectacular view.
It looks like an observation deck designed to resemble a crested eagle's egg, but its cute, round shape makes it perfect for taking memorable photos!

July in Okinawa is the height of summer! But it's not so much muggy and humid as it is breezy and dry.
Even so, the sun is strong, so sun protection is essential!
On days with a pleasant breeze or even on cloudy days, you'll get more tanned than usual.

Be especially careful when going to the beach or sightseeing with babies and young children!
As you know, their skin is still soft and thin, so it burns surprisingly quickly.
