"Obaa no Ya" (Grandma's House) is located in a residential area of Nago, less than 10 meters from National Route 58.
It blends in so well with its surroundings that you wouldn't easily notice it unless it had a banner or sign.
Stepping into Grandma's house, you feel a sense of nostalgia.
It feels strangely more realistic than typical old houses. A shoe rack, a fan, a mysterious ornament. It looks like an old woman could come out from the back at any moment!
The numerous signed autograph boards displayed high up on the wall speak volumes about how delicious the yakiniku (Japanese barbecue) is, don't they?
This time, I enjoyed authentic Wagyu yakiniku at "Obaa no Ie," a charcoal grill yakiniku restaurant in Nago.

1. A real old Japanese house: "Grandma's house"

If it weren't for the banners displayed along National Route 58, no one would ever guess there's a restaurant in that location.
The road in front of the shop and further down is narrow, so if you're not confident in your driving skills, park at the Nago Citizens' Beach parking lot.
It's about a 1-minute walk from the free parking lot at Nago Citizens' Beach.
As I approached the shop, a warm yellow light spilled out from the entrance.

A sign placed in front of the entrance.

The reason it's called a power spot is because my grandmother's house is in a district called "Koki." It's quite an auspicious place name, isn't it?
They said "No wearing your best outfit." Is the smoke really that bad?
Signed autograph boards are lined up near the ceiling on the walls of the entrance hall, the tatami room, and the private rooms.

There are autographs from professional baseball players, including big names that everyone would recognize. The reason there are so many autographs from professional baseball players is probably because the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters hold their spring training camp in Nago every year.
The spacious tatami room was furnished with tables and cushions, creating an atmosphere that suggested a neighborhood gathering might be about to begin.
How can I describe it? I was momentarily overwhelmed by the dense and intense atmosphere inside the store.

Believe it or not, this grandmother's house was actually the grandmother's house of the previous owner.
The authentic feel of this house, emanating from it, was real.
2. I tried the top 5 most popular dishes at Grandma's House.
Since we had a reservation this time, we were given a private room in the back.
The private room looks like it can accommodate up to eight people. This private room also has a traditional Japanese alcove that gives it a homey feel.

Flipping through the menu, I saw a variety of options, from beef and pork dishes to side dishes and set menus.
Some familiar menu items include beef short ribs for ¥880, beef tongue for ¥1,180, pork skirt steak for ¥1,080, a vegetable platter for ¥680, island tofu salad for ¥780, and more.
The most popular set menu item is the Dejinaton Set for ¥13,800. It looks like it's quite a large portion. They also have a wide variety of drinks.

I happened to look out the window and spotted a blackboard with a "Grandma's House Popularity Ranking" written on it.

"I'll take everything that's written over there!"
This time, we decided to share one plate each of four recommended meat dishes and one dessert between the two of us.
Since I came by car, I had Sanpin tea to go with my yakiniku (grilled meat).

Once again...
Grandma's House Popularity Ranking!
The name represents the body 1st Place: Premium Sirloin
The marbling of fat is tempting. 2nd place: Premium Kainomi
Pork is sweet. 3rd place: Agu pork shoulder loin
I underestimated you. 4th place: Getakarubi
Excellent with meat 5th place: Coconut ice cream
We also have meat and vegetable set menus, various à la carte dishes, and individual Okinawan dishes.
Here we go, starting with four kinds of meat!

4th place: Geta Kalbi (beef short ribs) ¥1,580

This is meat from around the beef rib bones. Compared to the other meats we ordered, it looked like it might be a bit tough. I'm really sorry, but since it was ranked 4th, I let my guard down, but it was surprisingly tender! The short ribs were served with a sweet and light sauce.
3rd place: Agu pork shoulder loin ¥1,500

The pork loin is a substantial cut of meat, just the right thickness. When placed on the grill, the dripping fat causes flames to erupt. Yes, this is it, the sweet fat—pork never disappoints. The pork shoulder loin pairs perfectly with the yuzu pepper served alongside it!
2nd place: Premium Kainomi (beef flank steak) ¥1,580

This is the short rib meat closest to the tenderloin. You can tell just by looking at it, it's the kind that melts in your mouth!

They only serve five plates a day, which is an incredibly limited quantity! Apparently, some people take one bite and then order the rest! The kainomi (beef flank steak) is served with sauce!
1st Place: Kiwami ¥2,880

This piece looks like it's over 1 centimeter thick! When you place it in the middle of the grill, the fat starts to seep out and it flares up again!

Because of its fat content and thickness, it's best to cook it slowly on the edge of the grill. Despite being as thick as a steak, it's incredibly tender. Enjoy the juices with just salt.
Looking up at the ceiling, I see thick white smoke billowing out. I think I really should have avoided wearing my racing outfit.

Since it was originally a private house, even with the exhaust fan on, smoke tends to accumulate. Especially when there are a lot of customers, the whole place becomes covered in white smoke, and apparently, when that happens, they put on their swimming goggles and eat their meat (laughs).

We also had some butter-fried potatoes and egg soup in between, and we were nicely full.
Now, for the final dessert...
5th place: Coconut ice cream ¥500

I ordered the coconut ice cream on a whim, thinking, "It's ranked highly, so I might as well order it!" But you should definitely order this! The coconut flavor is strong, but it's not too sweet. It perfectly neutralizes the richness of the meat, leaving you feeling refreshed. I ate it saying, "Coconut and meat really do go well together!"
I ate nothing but good meat, I'm so full, thank you for the meal.
3. The playful staff at Grandma's house

Besides the delicious meat, all the staff at Obaa's House were incredibly charming. They provided excellent service, neither intrusive nor distant.
In particular, Hari, the only person in the shop who speaks English and is from Nepal, is very playful. While I was eating coconut ice cream, Hari came over and introduced himself without me even asking (I definitely didn't call him).
At first I was surprised and wondered what was going on, but she had simply come over to chat. However, she said she hardly ever talks outside of the shop. The reason is...
"I can't understand what my grandparents are saying..."
The atmosphere became warm and friendly, with everyone realizing that they were all in the same boat.
When I left the private room, the tatami seating area was completely full. There were even some customers from overseas. I wonder how they managed to find this place!
It was just over ¥10,000 for two people without alcohol. We ate our fill of delicious meat! This is the perfect restaurant for creating memories in Okinawa.
