1. A must-see for Iriomote Island tourists! The allure of Mariyudu Falls and Kanpire Falls

The Mariyudu Falls and Kanpire Falls are located in the upper reaches of the Urauchi River, which has its mouth in the northern part of Iriomote Island.

Mariyudu Falls

This magnificent waterfall has been selected as one of "Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls." The abundant water cascades down in two stages, and the highlight is the massive oval-shaped pool, 130 meters in diameter, which is the origin of its name, "Mari" (round) and "Yudu" (stagnation). While it was once possible to go all the way to the pool, nowadays, for ecosystem protection and safety reasons, only distant views from the observation deck are available. Nevertheless, the roar echoing through the subtropical greenery is breathtaking, like the heart of the jungle.

This is a "crossroads of life" connecting the sea and the mountains. Bull sharks migrating upstream from the brackish waters and various birds gathering at the water's edge intersect here. If you listen to the roaring sounds from the observation deck, you'll be overwhelmed by the intense presence of nature.

Kampire Falls

This sacred site means "the seat of God." The stream, stretching approximately 200 meters long and 50 meters wide, flows gently along the rocky surface, offering a sense of openness in contrast to Mariyudu. The bedrock is dotted with countless round holes (potholes) carved by pebbles and the water flow, allowing visitors to enjoy the mysterious beauty of nature's creations.

This place has been revered since ancient times as a gathering place for all the gods of the island. 2. How to get to Mariyudu Falls and Kampire Falls

Both waterfalls can be accessed by the "Urauchi River Sightseeing Boat" (no reservation required) or by trekking.
The Urauchi River sightseeing boat pier can be accessed by rental car, or by the free shuttle bus operated by Urauchi River Tourism between Uehara Port and the pier, or by regular bus service.
[Important] Pay attention to your return transportation! If you use the free shuttle bus, there is only one bus departing from Urauchi River at 13:30.
If you miss this bus, the last bus to Uehara Port departs from Urauchigawa bus stop at 15:41! Please be sure to adhere strictly to the schedule if you are using the bus.

In case of cancellation, you will need to take a shuttle bus from "Ohara Port" to Uehara Port (a 1-hour journey), and then travel to Urauchi River by local bus or other means. Please check in advance and allow ample time!
●Clothing and EquipmentWe recommend changing into trekking attire beforehand. Minimize skin exposure to protect yourself from leeches. Rubber boots are available for rent at the sightseeing boat reception (free of charge).
●Toilet: ① Ishigaki Port ② Sightseeing boat dock ③ Near Gunkan-iwa (Battleship Rock) There are three locations. There is not enough time at Uehara Port on the way there.
