Jimami Tofu (6 varieties) TopJimami tofu is a soul food of Okinawa, made by simmering peanut juice for a long time.

Compared to regular tofu made from soybeans, this tofu is characterized by its chewy and sticky texture.

Even though it's all called Jimami Tofu, there are many different kinds!
So, this time, I tried and compared six different types of "jimami tofu" that you can easily buy at supermarkets in Okinawa.

The individually packaged sizes make them perfect as souvenirs. Why not find your favorite "Jimami Tofu" and take some home with you?

"Tomi-chan's Jimami Tofu" started as a hobby project by Tomi-chan, the representative's mother, and now they even have a workshop in Urasoe.
The secret to its deliciousness, apparently, is that they deliberately avoid using machines and instead make everything by hand using traditional recipes.

When you remove the lid and peel off the film, the jimami tofu is so chewy and sticky that it almost clings to the surface!
To put it simply, out of the six types, "Tomi-chan's Jimami Tofu" had the strongest chewy texture.

Taking a sip as is, I don't really taste much sweetness or richness...?
However, once you add the sauce, the flavor completely changes; the just-right saltiness of the soy sauce enhances the taste of the ingredients.

They're not exactly cheap at 129 yen each, but I regret not buying more.
It's no wonder this product was so popular that it had the fewest items in stock; the quality is truly impressive.

2. Jimami Tofu | Maesato Co., Ltd.

"Maesato Jimami Tofu Co., Ltd." even has TV commercials airing within the prefecture.
The retro packaging makes a big impact and enhances the strong local feel.

Compared to the former, "Tomi-chan's Jimami Tofu," it's slightly less sticky, but still has a satisfyingly chewy texture.
The aroma of peanuts that hits your nose as soon as you open the lid is incredible. Would it be accurate to describe it as the ultimate peanut tofu?

When you take a bite without adding anything, you can taste the rich flavor of the peanuts themselves, and a subtle sweetness and aroma linger in the aftertaste.
The sauce was quite strong, so I recommend adding it little by little to adjust the amount.

With a generous 100g portion and a strong peanut flavor, you're sure to get that satisfying feeling of having eaten jimami tofu! (lol)
For those who want to enjoy Jimami Tofu, a dish they don't usually have many opportunities to eat, to their heart's content, this Jimami Tofu will fulfill that wish.

3. Jimami Tofu | Nora Honpo Co., Ltd.

Chewiness: ★★★☆☆

We're now in the middle of our taste test, and next up is "Nora Honpo's Jimami Tofu," which you can (seem to) find in almost any supermarket.
The character with a smiley face drawn on a peanut is quite memorable.

The chewy texture isn't as pronounced compared to the previous two, so I'm giving it 3 stars.
It has just the right amount of stickiness, yet a spoon can easily pierce it, so even those trying jimami tofu for the first time might find it appealing.

When eaten as is, it has surprisingly little flavor! I almost forgot it was jimami tofu.
I think it would be better to call Jimami Tofu a pudding.

Jimami tofu goes well with both savory and sweet toppings, such as soy sauce and brown sugar syrup.
With such a mild flavor, it's sure to be delicious no matter which way you use it! It's also great value for money, making it perfect for giving out as souvenirs.

4. Jimami Tofu | Ryukyu Urizun Bussan Co., Ltd.

Jimami Tofu (Ryukyu Urizun Products)[Product information]

Sweetness: ★☆☆☆☆
Richness: ★☆☆☆☆
Chewiness: ★★☆☆☆

"Ryukyu Urizun Bussan's Jimami Tofu" is a long-established company that has been making tofu-yo and jimami tofu for over 45 years.
Is it just a coincidence that the packaging uses yellow and red, just like Nora Honpo's?

To put it bluntly, it had the least chewy texture of the six, and was more like agar-agar than peanut tofu!
Compared to the sticky and chewy texture of previous products, this one has a remarkably bouncy and jiggly texture.

It lacks sweetness and richness, and doesn't really stand out as jimami tofu.
The sauce wasn't too strong either, giving the overall impression of a light and refreshing dish.

This is purely my personal opinion, but I think that "Ryukyu Urizun Bussan's Jimami Tofu" would go better with a savory seasoning than a sweet one.
Next time, I'd like to try it with soy sauce and grated ginger.

5. Jimami Tofu | Okinawa Daily Foods Co., Ltd.

Jimami Tofu (Okinawa Daily Foods)[Product information]

Chewiness: ★★★☆☆

"Okinawa Daily Foods Jimami Tofu" is tempting with its creamy texture and chewy consistency. It was the only one of the six products sold at room temperature, and with a shelf life of approximately three months, it's no ordinary jimami tofu.

Personally, I didn't find it to be as chewy as advertised.
But the biggest difference is its creaminess. Even just scooping it with a spoon reveals a distinctly different, smooth texture.

When you try it without adding anything, the natural sweetness and richness of the peanuts come through quite directly!
It had a smooth texture, like blancmange, and melted instantly in my mouth.

If you prefer a creamy texture over a chewy one, try "Okinawa Daily Foods Jimami Tofu."
The fact that it can be stored at room temperature for a long period of time is another point worth noting.

6. Ryukyu Jimami Tofu | Hadom Food Service Co., Ltd.

Jimami Tofu (Ryukyu Jimami Tofu) by Hadom Food Service[Product information]

Sweetness: ★★★☆☆
Richness: ★★★★☆
Chewiness: ★★★☆☆

The final item in our taste test of six types of jimami tofu is "Hadomu Food Service's Ryukyu Jimami Tofu."
It is said that they have used Nuchimaasu (Okinawan salt) to make it milder and recreate the taste of the Ryukyu Kingdom era. It comes in a large 130g size.

You can't tell how chewy it is just by opening the film and putting a spoon in, so take a bite first.
"Oh, it's delicious...!" This is just my personal opinion, but this is the best quality I've had so far, out of the six I've tried.

The chewiness is just right, and the sweetness and richness of the peanuts spread gently in your mouth. The balance of sweetness, richness, and chewiness is well-harmonized, giving it a refined impression.

I felt that 130g was a little too much, but if anything, it was almost not enough.
There are many ways to eat it, but the best way to enjoy it here is simply with the accompanying sauce.

7. The chewy texture is irresistible!

This project was full of eye-opening insights, showing just how much difference there can be between different manufacturers of the same product, "Jimami Tofu."

This is purely my personal opinion, but here is my ranking of the most delicious foods.
① Hadom Food Service's Ryukyu Jimami Tofu
② Tomi-chan's Jimami Tofu
③ Maesato Co., Ltd.'s Jimami Tofu

Often, these have a firm, chewy texture and allow you to appreciate the true flavor of peanuts.

Next time you visit Okinawa, be sure to pick up some "Jimami Tofu" (peanut tofu) from a local supermarket as a souvenir!
