Okinawa's weather during spring break

Okinawa Spring Break Climate
In late March, daytime temperatures in Okinawa often reach around 20-23°C, giving it a feel similar to early summer on the main island of Japan. However, temperatures can drop to around 15-17°C in the mornings and evenings, and it can feel particularly chilly on cloudy or windy days. Since northerly winds tend to linger during this time, the perceived temperature can be lower, so it's a good idea to bring a light jacket or cardigan.
Okinawa Spring Break Clothing
During the day, some people wear short sleeves, while others wear long sleeves. It's a rather in-between time of year, neither too hot nor too chilly—you might see someone wearing a fleece jacket but flip-flops on their feet.

As for clothing, you can comfortably wear a T-shirt, light shirt, jeans, or dress during the day, but it can get chilly in the early morning or evening, so it's a good idea to bring a light jacket or cardigan.

Even if the sun is shining gently, UV rays are strong, so in addition to wearing a hat and sunglasses, it's a good idea to apply plenty of sunscreen. It's also a good idea to bring a folding umbrella to protect against sudden downpours!

It's the pre-season for swimming. Long periods of swimming are not recommended.

Okinawa Spring BreakIn Okinawa, some beaches officially open for swimming from mid- to late March, preparing to welcome spring break tourists. However, the water temperature is still relatively low, around 20-22°C, making it unsuitable for extended swimming. Please limit your time to short dips, taking photos, or simply enjoying the scenery, and be sure to avoid overexertion.

Recommended spots and experiences for your spring break trip to Okinawa

Whale watching

Okinawa Spring Break
If you're visiting Okinawa during spring break, whale watching is a must-try. Every year from winter to spring, humpback whales appear in the waters around Okinawa and near the Kerama Islands for giving birth and raising their young. The area around the Kerama Islands, in particular, has a high encounter rate, and the biggest attraction is being able to observe up close the massive breaching of the whales and the sight of mothers and calves swimming together. Even though it's still too early in the season for swimming, this activity allows you to fully experience the rich ocean and the power of nature in Okinawa. Be sure to enjoy it as a special memory of your spring break.

Illumination

While illuminations are strongly associated with winter on Honshu, many spots in Okinawa continue their displays until early spring, adding color to nighttime sightseeing. At one of the representative spots, "Southeast Botanical Gardens," the vast garden and fantastical lights blend together, giving you the feeling of being in a magical tropical world. Meanwhile, in Chatan Town, the bright streets are adorned with light sculptures, and the seaside night view and illuminations, especially around American Village, blend exquisitely. It's also appealing as you can enjoy a romantic atmosphere while spending time with family and friends.

Spring break crowding and travel costs

Okinawa Spring Break
Traveling to Okinawa during the spring break period requires caution due to potential crowds and high travel costs. In particular, the number of tourists increases after the spring equinox, when elementary and junior high school students begin their spring break, and congestion peaks mainly on weekends.

Airplane tickets can be about 1.5 to 2 times more expensive than usual; for example, a one-way ticket between Tokyo and Okinawa can rise to around 15,000 to 25,000 yen. Accommodation costs can also increase by more than 1.5 times, even for hotels where a typical nightly rate is 7,000 to 10,000 yen. On the other hand, once April arrives, the crowds subside, and one-way airfares tend to be around 10,000 yen, while accommodation and rental car costs also tend to decrease slightly. To keep travel costs down, the key is to depart on weekdays and book early.

Furthermore, if you plan to travel during this period, it may be difficult to reserve a rental car, and the rental process may take longer. For a smooth trip, we recommend planning your itinerary with plenty of leeway, taking into account travel time and time spent at tourist destinations. With thorough preparation, you can enjoy a fulfilling trip even during peak season.
