1. About the rainy season in Okinawa

Because Okinawa has a subtropical climate, it generally doesn't rain all day long. In short, it's like the diagram below.

Even if it's raining, you can still go into the sea and play, but you might not be able to expect the ocean to be as blue as the pictures in the brochures.
You could plan ahead and head to the beach if the weather is nice, but you might end up being at the mercy of the weather.

There are ways to enjoy the rainy season, but if you're going to go out, it's better to avoid the annoying worry of "another downpour," right?

2. When will the rainy season end?

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the end of the rainy season in 2026 is expected around June 29th. In fact, there was a weather report that predicted the end of the rainy season would be around June 20th, but it was pushed back by two typhoons that hit shortly after.

While the end of the rainy season in Okinawa is naturally earlier than in Tokyo, the duration of the rainy season itself is roughly the same, lasting 30 to 45 days.

This is purely my personal prediction and not a guarantee, but if you're planning a trip to Okinawa right after the end of the rainy season, I'd say from the third week of June to the beginning of July.Especially the last week of June—This means travel costs are relatively low, and the weather is generally stable, making it a great place to have fun.

3. What will Okinawa be like after the rainy season ends?

okinawa-after-monsoon-image6
Once the rainy season ends, clear, sunny days spread across the country, but what will the temperature and humidity be like?
Humidity during the rainy season can reach as high as 85%, but it seems to drop by about 5% once the rainy season ends.

But either way, high humidity would make it uncomfortable, wouldn't it?

Okinawa has a warm climate typical of a subtropical region, where the temperature never drops below 16℃ throughout the year.
Last year (2024), the average temperature from June to September was approximately 29.0°C, and the average humidity was approximately 81%.

Although the humidity drops thanks to the warmer temperatures after the rainy season ends, it still feels "muggy and hot."
On the other hand, the hotter and more humid it is, the more refreshing and enjoyable swimming in the sea can be.

4. Why a trip to Okinawa after the rainy season is recommended

Reason 1: Travel prices are relatively low from right after the end of the rainy season until early July, so it's recommended!

When you look at travel brochures and the like, you'll see the letters "A" used in price comparisons.
Since prices vary depending on the travel agency, I will explain them using alphabetical notation.

The cheapest prices are definitely until early June, and most are marked with an "A" rating.
From the second weekend of June onwards, the grade will increase week by week from B, C, D, and so on.

Therefore, the best time to go is definitely from mid-June to early July, when the rainy season ends!
As we move into mid-July, the price can sometimes double the A rate!
Summer in Okinawa starts right after the rainy season ends, and it's relatively less crowded, so it's definitely worth considering!

Point 2: The number of approaching typhoons is relatively low!

The biggest worry when traveling to Okinawa is the approach of a typhoon. If it hits directly, all plans will be ruined.
If a plane doesn't take off, it means you can't get home, and if it hits directly, you might not even be able to swim in the ocean—unfortunate consequences.

The above shows the number of typhoons that approached Okinawa and Amami from 2005 to 2018, but in fact, typhoons start approaching as early as April.

According to the data above, the period most likely to experience typhoons is "July to September".
過去14年間で6月は10回・7月は24回・8月は28回・9月は26回と、7月からグンと確率が上がることがわかります。
For these reasons, we recommend planning your trip to coincide with the end of the rainy season in late June.

Point 3: The sunlight is stronger, making the water even clearer and more beautiful!

Of course, one thing you absolutely can't miss when traveling to Okinawa is playing in the ocean!
As the sunlight intensifies, the rays penetrate the ocean and reflect off the seabed, making the ocean's color appear even more beautiful.

Even in shallow waters, you can see vibrant coral sparkling in the sunlight, allowing you to fully enjoy the tropical sea.

5. What should I wear when going to Okinawa after the rainy season ends?

okinawa-after-monsoon-image10

As mentioned above, it's hot and humid outside, so light summer clothing like short sleeves will be fine.
However, many of the facilities are heavily air-conditioned, so it's a good idea to pack a light cardigan or other light jacket in your bag.

Also, if you don't like feeling sticky, we recommend using disposable wet body wipes, which are sold regularly!
For even better results, try adding a cooling sheet or body-cooling spray to the wet wipes. Give it a try!
