Let's enjoy "Eisa Night"! Youth associations from all over the country will gather in Okinawa City, the city of Eisa.

Eisa Night
The annual Eisa Night, a large-scale summer event that generates great excitement in Okinawa City, has finally begun! Eisa, a traditional Okinawan performing art, is a Buddhist dance performed mainly by local youth associations to honor ancestors. Eisa events are held all over Okinawa Prefecture from Golden Week to the Obon festival.
At the beginning of the Eisa season, a major event called "Eisa Night" takes place. Starting in mid-June each year, this event is held over three sessions, bringing together talented youth groups from all over the country. The powerful sound of drums and the dynamic dances resonate through the night streets, captivating everyone who watches.

2. I went to Eisa Night 2025.

Eisa Night
The venue for the first Eisa Night of 2025 will be the Okinawa Suntory Arena, also known as the home arena of the Ryukyu Golden Kings, a professional basketball team in the B.League.
The venue, usually bustling with sports events and concerts, was filled with the energy of Eisa dance on this day.

The powerful performances of each youth association

Eisa Night
When I arrived at the venue a little after 8 PM, the third performance, by the Yamasato Youth Association, was already underway. As soon as I entered the venue, the lively sound of the sanshin and the deep bass of the taiko drum resonated throughout my body, and I was instantly drawn into the world of Eisa.
Eisa Night
The sight of the young people, all dressed in matching costumes, dancing dynamically to the accompaniment of shouts, was truly breathtaking! Among them were some tiny performers, perhaps in the lower grades of elementary school, and their cute and cool appearance was absolutely adorable.
Eisa Night
With shouts and cheers, the formations changed one after another, and I was captivated by the performance from beginning to end.
Eisa Night
In the second half, there was a scene where a performer known as a flag bearer swung the flag at a low position, and the entire venue erupted in excitement at the impressive sight.
After the Yamasato Youth Association's performance ended, there was a five-minute announcement over the loudspeaker, and then the first and final performance of 2025, by the Nakanomachi Youth Association, began.
Eisa Night
This time, they appeared in costumes of different colors and with different choreography, and a woman joined them. The powerful "boom, boom" sound and rhythm of the drums were impressive. The graceful movements of the woman's arms and legs were also wonderful, and I was completely captivated.
Eisa Night
The individual movements of each performer, and the overall dynamism, were quite different from the youth group's performance we saw earlier, and it was very enjoyable to watch.
Eisa, originally performed to honor the spirits of ancestors, is said to have meaning in every single dance movement. Because different regions add their own styles and arrangements, you can enjoy different performances depending on the youth group.

Arena facilities including seating, as well as food trucks and merchandise vendors.

Eisa Night
There were multiple entrances to the performance floor in the center of the arena, and you could enter from anywhere. Seating was unreserved on the main floor, first floor, and second floor.
The floor area, where you can even feel the performers' breathing, is popular, and apparently some people reserve their spots as soon as the doors open.
Eisa Night
By the middle of the show, the venue was almost full, but there were still some empty seats here and there. People were free to come and go and stand up from their seats even during the performance, so it seemed unlikely that you wouldn't be able to find a seat even if you arrived partway through. I saw many people looking for seats while being careful not to obstruct the view of others.
Eisa Night
Although on a small scale, there were three food trucks set up in front of the arena, selling taco rice, steak bowls, meat-wrapped rice balls, drinks, and more. Snacks were also being sold inside the arena, and there were long lines at every stall. In addition, polo shirts made to commemorate the 70th anniversary were being sold in the arena lobby, and some colors were already sold out.

While most Eisa events are held outdoors, this indoor event was cooler and had amenities like restrooms, nursing rooms, and diaper changing stations, making it a safe and enjoyable experience for families with children.

3. Conclusion

There are only two Eisa Nights left in 2025! Each event will be held at a different venue and feature a different youth association, so you can expect a new and exciting experience no matter how many times you visit!
A fascinating event where locals and tourists alike can come together to enjoy Okinawa's traditional culture by "seeing," "hearing," "feeling," and "dancing" to it! This summer, let's fully enjoy the Okinawan summer at "Eisa Night," where your heart and body will be heated up!
