Chatan Town, located on the coast in the central part of Okinawa Island, is a place where you'll want to spend your time leisurely, taking detours wherever your heart takes you, rather than rushing to a predetermined destination.
Mihama American Village (hereafter referred to as American Village), with its rows of colorful buildings, and Sunset Beach, bustling with people waiting for the sunset, are classic tourist spots in Chatan. Both can be visited on foot, but with a bicycle, you can easily venture "beyond" the popular areas, such as Araha Beach. The scenery, shops, and even the seaside air that makes you want to stop and linger will become cherished memories of your trip.
This time, we'll take a leisurely cycling trip through Chatan, starting from American Village and connecting Set Beach, Araha Beach, and a cafe break. Rather than competing on distance or speed, we'll introduce a short trip to Chatan where you can enjoy the Chatan coastline at your own pace through leisurely cycling (like a stroll).
Let's start our carefree seaside trip from American Village.
We'll start from American Village, the heart of Chatan's tourist area.

This seaside area, with its colorful buildings housing shops, restaurants, and hotels, is bustling with people year-round. While simply cycling around is enjoyable, the area is dotted with unique shops and street art, so perhaps it's best to stroll around, pushing your bike, and soak up the atmosphere of the town.

You can get to Sunset Beach directly from the boardwalk along the coast via Rainbow Road.

At Sunset Beach, you can feel the ocean of Chatan right beside you.
Sunset Beach boasts a sandy shoreline stretching approximately 200 meters, making it a great spot for swimming and, as its name suggests, for watching the sunset.

Sunset Beach in the daytime was bustling with people enjoying a beach party (BBQ), a classic summer event for Okinawan residents.

The contrast between the colorful scenery of American Village and the natural beauty of the ocean at Sunset Beach is another charm that is unique to Chatan.

Head south along the coast to the Araha Beach area, a popular spot for locals.
Further south from Sunset Beach, the more you move away from American Village, the more the local atmosphere intensifies.

Sunset Beach is about 2 km from Araha Beach, which is a bit far to walk, but it's an easy distance to cover by bicycle.

The area along Araha Beach has been developed into a park. With walking paths, a large athletic playground, and gazebos scattered throughout, it's the perfect place to relax and unwind.
The park's trademark is its beachside basketball court. You can also enjoy marine sports in the sea and beach volleyball on the sandy shore.

There are small cafes and bars along the beach. If you venture a little further towards National Route 58, you'll find "Mexico," a famous Okinawan taco restaurant, making this the perfect area to spend a cozy time in Okinawa.

American Village looked a little smaller than usual, but the gentle gradient of the scenery is also part of the charm of cycling.

A break at a cafe marks the end of our cycling trip in Chatan.
After finishing our run along the Chatan coast, we returned to American Village and headed to WaGyu-Cafe KAPUKA, located by the sea.

As the name suggests, the restaurant offers a menu featuring wagyu beef, making it perfect for those who want a hearty meal. They also have a cafe menu, so you can enjoy something sweet or a drink to cool down after your meal.

Why not reflect on your cycling trip while enjoying the blue sea during the day, or watching the sky change color in the evening?

In conclusion – Chatan: The more detours you take, the more it feels like a real trip.

From the bustling American Village, which feels like a theme park, to the ocean views at Sunset Beach, and then to the relaxing time at Araha Beach, the route isn't particularly long in terms of distance, but connecting these places by bicycle adds depth to the image of Chatan Town.
The charm of Chatan lies in the fact that it offers both the vibrant atmosphere of a tourist destination and the tranquil scenery of everyday life, all within easy reach.
If you're visiting Chatan, don't just stop at walking around American Village; try venturing out a bit by bicycle. Take your time, stop at any scenery that catches your eye, and enjoy the seaside atmosphere. That time itself will be the most luxurious way to enjoy a trip to Chatan.
You can rent bicycles at "SHUHARI BIKE WORKS," a shop located in a corner of American Village.
