Located on Park Avenue in the heart of Koza, Okinawa City, "Charlie Tacos" is a long-established taco shop founded in 1956. Known as the "original Okinawan taco" shop that has been around since the American occupation era, it is bustling with locals and tourists every day.
These tacos, made entirely from scratch including the tortillas, have a comforting, nostalgic taste. Tourists can experience the old-fashioned atmosphere of Koza while tasting a dish that touches upon Okinawa's history.
This time, I visited Charlie Takoju Main Store. I'll introduce the atmosphere of the restaurant, the taste, and the charm I felt after actually eating there, along with photos.

Charlie Takoju Main Store Menu

I had decided to eat tacos when I arrived, but when I looked at the menu, I was spoiled for choice because of its wide variety. In addition to classic tacos and taco rice, they also had antianladas, risotto, hamburgers, and pasta, offering a diverse lineup like a Western-style restaurant.
They also offer set menus that combine tacos and taco rice, and a great feature is that you can freely choose the number and size of tacos. It's perfect for a solo lunch or a meal to share with friends.

What's even better is the extensive drink menu, which includes beer and more. They have everything from cola and orange juice to smoothies and coffee, all of which pair perfectly with the tacos. You can relax with a cold beer in the afternoon, or take a break with a cup of coffee, enjoying it however you like.
Time to eat! I'm having the classic 3-piece taco set.

First, you order at the counter, and then you find a seat. Please note that you cannot reserve a seat beforehand.

I ordered Charlie Takosu's popular menu item, the "3 Tacos and Drink Set (1190 yen)". You can choose your favorite taco filling from beef, chicken, or tuna.
Since we had the opportunity, we decided to try all three flavors this time. I was excited because it was my first time having chicken and tuna as taco fillings.

The chicken is lighter than the beef, yet still very satisfying. It's filling and leaves you feeling pleasantly satisfied. The tuna also had a surprisingly fresh taste and paired perfectly with the tacos.
The beef is a classic and reliable choice. The juicy meaty flavor fills your mouth, and it's undeniably delicious in its traditional way. By comparing the three types, the individual characteristics of each stand out, and I was able to enjoy them without getting bored until the very end.

This is a set meal (1190 yen) that includes two tacos, fries, and a drink. The fries come in both thin and thick, fluffy varieties, which adds a fun contrast in texture and a playful touch. The set is a great value with a drink included, and it's nice that it can be enjoyed by one person or shared.
A charmingly retro interior

The shop has a nostalgic atmosphere, with a unique feel that evokes the remnants of the American occupation era.

The walls are lined with slightly faded posters and old-fashioned decorations, giving the place the feel of a Showa-era coffee shop or street corner diner. Since I visited in October, there were Halloween decorations scattered throughout.

What particularly catches the eye are the numerous celebrity autographs displayed on the walls. The handwriting of past regulars and famous people who have visited the shop tells the story of its history and how much it has been loved by people.

Children's plates and water were provided next to the cash register. It's easy to visit even with children, and you can feel the thoughtful consideration.

It's a nostalgic and charming space. Enjoying freshly made tacos while gazing at the autographs of famous people lining the walls is a luxurious moment that makes you feel like you've traveled back in time to a street corner in the Showa era.
