Nakijin Old House Cafe KURURU | A relaxing space created over 4 years, and hearty taco rice

Old House Cafe Kururu

Leaving the bustling tourist areas behind, we venture into the quiet settlements of Nakijin Village. Nestled in a narrow alleyway, in an area where many Fukugi trees remain, is "Kururu," the old folk house cafe we're introducing today.

This shop, enveloped in a relaxed atmosphere as if time itself had changed, is actually a special place that the young owner renovated by hand, piece by piece. The owner is very friendly and easy to talk to, and will readily share any stories about how he opened the shop and behind-the-scenes tales of the renovations.

The taco rice allows you to fully enjoy the deliciousness of their signature meat. Not only is the taco rice great, but the owner's lively stories and warm personality leave you feeling energized and positive.

We want visitors to experience the relaxed atmosphere of Nakijin Village, enjoy a chat, and savor the unique taco rice that can only be found here.

1. The store manager himself renovated the space! A warm and inviting space filled with his passion.

"Kururu," a traditional Japanese house cafe, is located just a minute's drive off National Route 505, the main road in Nakijin Village. Amidst the trees swaying in the breeze, the stylish concrete sign stands out against the dignified, aged style of the old house.

This space was created by a young shop owner in his twenties who studied on his own and spent four years perfecting it. Apparently, he replaced the floors, walls, and ceilings all by hand.
The dignified beauty of concrete and the warmth of wood that gently embraces the rich nature of Nakijin. The refined, modern concrete harmonizes with the charm of a traditional wooden building.

"

I had no experience renovating old houses,
I felt like I had no choice but to do it, and I started studying and creating it at the same time.
Before I knew it, it had turned out like this.

"

- Store Manager

The house was renovated with the intention of preserving the unique atmosphere of an old Japanese house while also allowing guests to "relax and experience something out of the ordinary."
The shop has a total of four seats. You can enjoy a comfortable time in a spacious and relaxed atmosphere.

▲Kururu Taco Rice▲

Taco rice is a soul food of Okinawa that can be found everywhere in Okinawa.
The owner's desire to "create something unlike anything else" led to the creation of Kururu's signature dish.
They use specially sourced, custom-made coarsely ground meat, which has a chunky texture and rich meaty flavor that spreads in your mouth, unlike typical ground meat, giving it a much more substantial meaty presence.
They even surprise you by torching the cheese right in front of you after you order! The taco meat, combined with the hot, gooey cheese and soft-boiled egg, creates a truly rich flavor.

The dish uses a total of eight spices, including cumin and chili. While cheddar cheese is commonly used as a topping for taco rice, this version features a unique blend of cheddar and natural cheeses!
The salsa sauce served with the taco rice enhances the flavor with its tomato acidity and spicy kick.

▲Getto Tea▲

For the drink set, I chose "Getto Tea." This herbal tea has been popular in Okinawa for a long time and is said to soothe the digestive system and have a relaxing effect (the drink may change depending on the day).
They also offer three other homemade desserts (homemade black sugar syrup and kinako vanilla ice cream / homemade brown sugar Basque cheesecake / homemade caramel snow salt pudding). All of them are handmade by the shop owner and are perfect for an afternoon coffee break.
