Cafe Ten no Fune | A cafe resembling a spaceship that suddenly appears in Motobu Town, Okinawa Prefecture

Cafe Ten no Fune

Cafe Ten no Fune is located in the mountains of Motobu Town, Okinawa Prefecture, surrounded by the Yanbaru forest. After following a single road surrounded by greenery, you will come across a white, disc-shaped building that looks like a spaceship.

The building has an open atrium in the center, offering a panoramic view of the blue sky. On either side are glass-enclosed cafe spaces and the residences of the owner couple, making for a truly unique architectural design.

The cafe serves homemade galettes made by the owner, who lived in France for many years. You can enjoy a unique dish incorporating ingredients from Yanbaru while feeling the forest scenery and the breeze.

This time, we'll introduce the architecture of "Cafe Ten no Fune," which blends seamlessly into nature, and their exquisite galettes.

A cafe that looks like a spaceship, why is it here?!

A white, disc-shaped building suddenly appears amidst the natural beauty of Yanbaru. Its unique exterior is so eye-catching that you can't help but exclaim, "What is this place! Amazing!"Cafe Ten no Fune

The building is designed so that the wind flows straight through from the entrance, and if you look up from inside the building, you can see a vast blue sky.

The building was designed by Kinichi Ogata, who is based in Sendai. The owners were so impressed by Ogata's work that it became the impetus for the construction.

"There's a building in Sendai where Mr. Ogata lives and works as a gallery, and when I visited Sendai before, I spoke with him and was really charmed by how friendly he was. And it fit perfectly with my budget, so I decided to have him build it there."

Currently, half of the building is used as a cafe and the other half as a residence.

The owners value more than just the building itself.

"I want people to experience the natural beauty of Yanbaru—the sky, clouds, light, and rain—and the human creations such as architecture and cuisine. Every view from here is different, rain or shine, even in winter. I want people to savor all of it."

The nature of Yanbaru reveals a different face each time you visit. You can enjoy a unique experience in this place, encompassing architecture, cuisine, and even the weather of the day.

French-style galettes with ingredients from Yanbaru

At "Cafe Ten no Fune," you can enjoy homemade galettes made with organic and gluten-free ingredients.

The couple decided to include galettes on the menu because they wanted to share their favorite foods and things they consider delicious with their customers. Based on the flavors developed by the owner, who lived in France for a long time, they incorporate ingredients from the Yanbaru region.

The drinks I had this time were "Yanbaru no Mori" and "Homemade Passion Fruit Soda".

"Yanbaru no Mori" contains purple sweet potato, papaya kimchi, bitter melon, tuna, cheese, and pesto sauce.

The outside is baked to a crisp, while the inside offers the sweetness of purple sweet potato and the spicy kick of papaya kimchi. The chewy dough and fillings combine to create a satisfying and substantial meal. This galette is unique to this place, bringing together ingredients from Yanbaru and French culinary culture in one dish.

The "Homemade Passion Fruit Soda" uses homemade passion fruit syrup, and with every sip, you can enjoy the sweetness of the fruit and the delightful popping texture.
