Yonaguni Island and delicious food...
Many people might not quite understand this.
Indeed, there aren't many restaurants on the small island of Yonaguni.
But there is a restaurant that serves exquisite island cuisine that rivals that of other remote islands!
Even on Okinawa Island, there might not be another restaurant this delicious...!
On the small island of Yonaguni, located at the westernmost tip of Japan, there are actually some exquisite dishes hidden away.
This time, we've carefully selected two restaurants where you can enjoy exquisite cuisine!
*Notice of Yuki's shop closing*
Unfortunately, Yuki's place, which was the first place we introduced, closed down in October 2015.
Below is some information about the shop when it was in operation, for those who have fond memories of "Yuki-san's Place."

Final thoughts
1. Yuki's house
If you're looking for a place to have lunch on Yonaguni Island, I highly recommend this spot.
This is "Yuki-san's Place," the westernmost curry restaurant in Japan. Of course, the restaurant's name comes from the owner, Yuki-san.
"Curry after coming all the way to Yonaguni Island? I want to eat Okinawan soba or other Okinawan food..." If that's what you're thinking.
Try it, even if you think you're being tricked. I'm sure you'll want to come back tomorrow!
Yuki's house is built like a renovated old farmhouse. There are no walls except for the roof, and there is no air conditioning.
Of course, since it's Yonaguni Island in the tropics, it gets hot in the summer, but enjoying curry in the shade of the lush trees and a refreshing breeze is a luxurious experience you absolutely cannot have in the city.
Yuki's menu consists only of a daily special curry and a long-life grass roll cake for dessert.
They have a wide selection of drinks, including Orion beer and red wine.
On hot days, I recommend bringing a fan with you.
Also, if there are mosquitoes, you can ask Yuki and she will prepare mosquito coils for you.
On this day, the curry was chicken and egg curry. (700 yen)
It looks delicious with that runny soft-boiled egg on top. Let's eat!
I was surprised the moment I put it in my mouth!
This is a refreshing curry unlike anything I've ever tasted before, and it's incredibly delicious!
The acidity of the tomatoes and the subtle, gentle sweetness of the apples go together perfectly, making this refreshing curry absolutely exquisite and ideal for the hot Yonaguni Island.
I was so impressed that I could eat such an elaborate curry at the westernmost curry restaurant in Japan!
While homemade curry made by mothers is delicious, you can really feel Yuki's dedication in the curry here.
The curry changes daily, so you can discover a new flavor every time you visit.
Yuki's restaurant is very popular, so they often sell out of curry.
I recommend going right when they open at 11:00 AM.
Also, please check Yuki-sanchi's blog ( http://blog.goyah.net/yukisanchi/ ) for information on temporary closures and other updates.
2. Isun
Next up is Isun, a popular izakaya (Japanese pub) among the locals.
Not just on Yonaguni Island, but throughout Okinawa, there are many restaurants that cater to tourists, often serving Okinawan cuisine that locals don't typically eat.
So, if you really want to eat delicious Okinawan food, the best thing to do is ask the locals!
I was recommended by the lady at the shop near the port and by the staff working at the guesthouse.
The food at Isun is simply delicious! I highly recommend going there not just for "a quick drink," but for "a hearty meal with drinks!"
In particular, you'll find all the delicious things Yonaguni Island has to offer, including its famous swordfish, kuruma prawns, and Miyarabi clams, which can only be eaten here!
This is a popular restaurant, so it's often full even on weekdays. Be sure to make a reservation before you go.
The first thing I want you to try is the swordfish sashimi.
Isun offers several dishes using swordfish, and they are all delicious, but I recommend trying it as sashimi first.
Fresh swordfish caught in the waters off Yonaguni is absolutely delicious. (700 yen)
These are rare swordfish dumplings. (450 yen)
Swordfish meat with ponzu sauce. (500 yen)
Swordfish meat stir-fried with miso. (1000 yen)
And so, it's all about swordfish!
However, since each dish is prepared using a different cooking method and has a different seasoning, you can enjoy a variety of flavors without getting bored.
This is grilled prawns from Yonaguni Island. (700 yen)
Yonaguni Island also has a prawn farm, so you can enjoy freshly caught prawns.
Because it's simply grilled with salt, this dish really lets you appreciate the delicious flavor of the prawns!
This is a rare dish that can only be enjoyed on Yonaguni Island: butter-grilled Miyarabi clams. (700 yen)
Miyarabi clams are a type of single-shelled mollusk found on Yonaguni Island.
The delicious flavor of the shellfish combined with the richness of the butter and soy sauce makes this truly exquisite!
I would highly recommend this product.
Another recommended dish is deep-fried peanut tofu (450 yen).
While jimami tofu is often eaten as is on Okinawa Island, deep-fried jimami tofu seems to be popular in izakayas (Japanese pubs) in the Yaeyama region.
Frying the peanut tofu brings out its chewy texture, and when you eat it with the broth, a wonderfully gentle flavor spreads in your mouth.
While many izakaya (Japanese pub) dishes have strong flavors, eating this deep-fried peanut tofu is a comforting experience.
In addition, they have a wide variety of dishes, including izakaya staples like chicken skin with ponzu sauce and kimchi fried rice, so much so that you'll forget you're on a remote island!
This is an absolutely fantastic izakaya located in the westernmost part of Japan, so please, please go and check it out!
Final thoughts
Above, we introduced some recommended lunch and dinner restaurants on Yonaguni Island.
This is Yonaguni Island, a small island located at the westernmost point of Japan.
Many people might think, "I don't have high expectations for the food...", but both of the restaurants I've introduced are absolutely delicious!
I think it would be difficult to find a restaurant this delicious even on Okinawa Island.
Yuki-san's restaurant serves exquisite, carefully crafted curry, and Isun is a luxurious seafood izakaya using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. If you're visiting Yonaguni Island, be sure to check them out!
