1. Timing and characteristics of typhoons in Okinawa

In Okinawa, the typhoon season runs from May to October, with the peak occurring in July, August, and September, which coincides perfectly with the summer holidays.
The major typhoons that caused significant damage in the 2020s occurred during their peak season.

<An example of a typhoon that caused extensive damage>

  Accrual date Okinawa approach period
2021年台風6号 November 17st Around September 20st to 24th
2022年台風11号 November 28st Around September 1st to 4th
2023年台風6号 November 31st March 8th to May 1th
2024年台風3号 November 19st March 7th to May 24th

On average, 7.8 typhoons approach Okinawa throughout the typhoon season, with 1 to 2 typhoons affecting Okinawa each month.
Even if a typhoon makes landfall, its effects usually subside within one to two days, or at most three days. However, marine sports such as snorkeling and diving may be affected for a longer period due to factors like high waves.

Which month is most affected by typhoons?

The reason typhoons tend to occur in the summer is that many of them move northward towards Japan along the outer edge of the Pacific high-pressure system.
In early summer, Okinawa is located in a transit point, so the probability of it coming close increases.
Typhoon mapThe map above shows model typhoon paths for each month.
In July and August, the Pacific high-pressure system is strong, and the upper-level clouds that guide typhoons are still weak, so typhoons often take unstable paths. However, from September onward, the Pacific high-pressure system weakens, and typhoons become more susceptible to being carried by the westerlies from the continent, resulting in shorter paths and faster speeds for typhoons.

Therefore, while the situation in Okinawa during July will require close attention, it is expected that typhoons will affect all of Japan in August and September.

The graph above shows the number of typhoons that approached within 300km of Okinawa between 2014 and 2024, plotted as a stacked bar graph by month.
While July to September sees by far the most typhoons, even during peak season, the average number of typhoons approaching a region per month is only about two.

2. Check the rainfall amount.

After checking the typhoon, the next thing I want to check is the rainfall! Rain is definitely something I'm concerned about.
There are many uncertain factors, making it difficult to give a precise answer, but I think you can make an educated guess based on the data so far. Let's take a look.

Okinawa typhoon season

Looking at the bar graph, we can see that rainfall increases during the rainy season in May and June, and again during the typhoon season in August and September.

Regarding temperatures, they are generally on the higher side throughout the year, but from June to October, it gets as hot as mid-summer.
October, with relatively few typhoons and many beaches open, might be a good time to visit.

However, the weather is really a matter of luck.
Just because it's summer doesn't mean typhoons are guaranteed to hit; the probability of them occurring between July and October is so low you could count it on your fingers!
I hope you'll come and experience Okinawa in the middle of summer without worrying too much.

What to do if a typhoon occurs while you're on a trip to Okinawa?

First and foremost, it's crucial to carefully check the cancellation policies for each booking, including flights, hotels, rental cars, and activities, regardless of whether there's a typhoon or not. It's also important to know the contact information for each booking.
For example, if you book a flight through a travel agency, the airline may not be able to handle cancellations or refunds for you (you'll have to ask the travel agency to do it). If you have enough time before departure, it's a good idea to check the cancellation procedure flow along with the contact information so you can deal with the situation calmly if something happens. If your flight is canceled, the airline's phone lines and website may be difficult to reach, so following them on social media can help you get the latest flight information.

Before departure

Always confirm with the booking provider whether or not there is a cancellation fee.
If your flight is canceled or expected to be canceled due to a typhoon, you can usually get a refund or change your flight without any fees.
However, conditions vary depending on the airline, travel agency, and booking details, so be sure to check the conditions with your booking provider.

The decision to cancel a flight is made at the earliest two days before the scheduled departure date.
You may receive a call or email from the booking company, so if you have blocked incoming calls or emails from unregistered numbers or email addresses, please make sure to allow them to contact you.

If your outbound flight is cancelled or changed, don't forget to also change or cancel your return flight, hotel, rental car, and local experience reservations.

During the travel

You may experience strong winds that can overturn cars, or torrential rains that can cut off roads.
If you encounter a typhoon while staying in Okinawa, try to avoid going outside as much as possible.

return date

In principle, you are responsible for arranging and paying for any additional accommodation or extension fees due to flight cancellations.
If your return flight is cancelled and you are unable to return home that day, you will need to arrange your own accommodation and rental car extensions, and these costs will be your responsibility.
To be prepared for situations where you have no other choice, it's reassuring to have travel insurance during typhoon season.
Many domestic travel insurance policies that include cancellation compensation (for extended stays) have application deadlines that are limited to 10 days before the departure date. Additionally, travel products (such as package tours) that include insurance services are also available, so it's a good idea to compare whether insurance is included or not when booking.

In addition to extending your stay, you will also need to arrange for changes to your flight reservations.
It's rare, but sometimes your booked flight is cancelled while other airlines' flights continue, but they almost never allow you to switch to another airline's flight.
With ANA and JAL, which have a wide range of flights and routes, there are plenty of alternative flight options (direct or connecting flights, etc.), which is reassuring in times of need.
(Transfer to a different flight on the same route is the basic option. Alternatives such as connecting flights are only available if the booking agent offers them as alternative options.)

If you happen to encounter a typhoon... for that reason, we've included some rainy-day activities in our related articles. Please be sure to check them out as well.
