Of the Kerama Islands I mentioned earlier, Nagannu Island is the closest to Naha. It is the largest island in the Chibishi Atoll, which is composed of three islands.

The only way to get there is by boat. This long, narrow island, with its unspoiled nature, boasts incredibly beautiful seas and coral sands that hardly seem like they belong in Japan.
The coral reefs surrounding the island are magnificent, and it might just be the perfect place to escape all your daily stresses.

2-4. Minna Island

This beautiful bay, famous for its black pearl cultivation, is a must-see, as the scenery changes depending on the time of day.

Also, depending on the time of year, you might be able to see manta rays.
You can also enjoy snorkeling on the "phantom island" accessible from Ishigaki Island, allowing you to fully experience the charm of remote islands.

2-10. Taketomi Island

Taketomi Island is a place where the good old traditions of the Ryukyu Islands remain strong.

Stepping onto the island feels like entering a different world. Houses with red tile roofs, the quintessential Okinawan style, line the streets, hibiscus flowers bloom in the gardens and along the paths, and you can hear the sound of the sanshin (Okinawan stringed instrument)...
You can also take a tour of this peaceful village in a water buffalo cart while listening to stories from the old man.

Actually, the island is famous for its Kuroshima beef, and the whole island is used as pastureland.
The population is only about 220 people, but the number of cows exceeds 3,000 – that's an incredible number, isn't it?

The main attractions include Nishinohama Beach, where sea turtles come to lay their eggs, Iko Pier which stretches straight out into the sea, and Kuroshima Observatory, which offers a panoramic view of the grazing land. It's an island well worth visiting.

Hateruma Island, Japan's southernmost inhabited island, is also famous for being a place where the Southern Cross can be seen at certain times of the year.

First and foremost, a must-visit is Takana Cape, located in the southern part of the island.

Furthermore, they also produce "Awanami," a rare awamori (Okinawan distilled spirit) that is hardly ever distributed outside the prefecture, making it a must-visit island for liquor lovers.

Iriomote Island, the largest island in the Yaeyama Islands, has more than half of its surface covered in jungle.
With activities like trekking to waterfalls, kayaking in the magroves, snorkeling in the ocean, and the chance to encounter rare creatures that inhabit the jungle, this is also recommended for active travelers.

The area is also very famous for diving. With numerous dive sites featuring diverse topography and offering year-round enjoyment, it attracts many divers.

2-15. Yubu Island

Yubu Island can be reached from Iriomote Island.
While it's possible to walk there at low tide, this is the only island you can reach by water buffalo cart, so most people use that option.
Taking a leisurely stroll while listening to the sanshin (Okinawan stringed instrument) will add a special touch to create even more cherished memories!
*On your second visit and beyond, we highly recommend walking. There's a foot-washing area once you cross to the island.

On Yubu Island, you'll find the Yubu Island Botanical Garden, which features a bougainvillea garden, a shell museum, and, for a rare treat, the Japanese giant white butterfly, one of the largest species in Japan.

2-16. Yonaguni Island

Yonaguni Island is Japan's westernmost island.
Access is a bit challenging, but the premium time spent on the island was absolutely wonderful.

Tourist attractions include "Dr. Koto's Clinic," which became famous after being broadcast on the Fuji TV network, as well as a monument at the westernmost point where you can take commemorative photos, and an observation deck nearby that offers a panoramic view of the island.

The underwater ruins lying beneath the sea are also a must-see.
The sight of Yonaguni horses roaming freely everywhere evokes a sense of tranquility, and you can enjoy a unique island trip where the sun sets last in Japan.

3. 17 Must-See Tourist Spots

3-1. Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium has now become one of Okinawa's most iconic attractions.

The main attraction is the "Kuroshio Sea" tank, where whale sharks and manta rays swim, but there are also many other things to see, such as areas where you can touch starfish and coral, exhibits of dangerous creatures, and a place where you can eat while watching the fish in the tanks.
There are also behind-the-scenes tours from above and hands-on learning activities, so there are programs that can be enjoyed by both children and adults.

Also, the dolphin show, located next to the aquarium and free to watch (even without entering the aquarium), is a must-see.

3-2. Shuri Castle Park

Shuri Castle Park offers a journey back to Okinawa's Ryukyu Kingdom era.
It was once the castle of the king who built a kingdom, but it was completely destroyed during the Battle of Okinawa. However, reconstruction efforts were undertaken and it was beautifully restored.
Although Shuri Castle ruins were later registered as a World Heritage Site, the park itself also has plenty to see.
The Sonohyan Utaki Stone Gate, a World Heritage Site located in front of the Kankaimon Gate as well as the Shureimon Gate, is also famous as a power spot.
There are many other places called "gates," such as the main gate of Shuri Castle, "Kankaimon."
This is a spot where you'll want to take your time and appreciate each and every detail.

3-3. Senaga Island Umikaji Terrace

Senaga Island is conveniently located just about a 15-minute drive from Naha Airport.
Senaga Island Umikaji Terrace is a new type of resort mall that opened on that island in August 2015.

Over 30 shops will gather, offering a wide variety of Okinawan cuisine, goods, and more.
This four-story building, predominantly white and arranged in a stepped design, is truly worthy of being called an island resort. In the evening, you can even toast with a beer while watching the beautiful sunset!

This popular commercial complex, which has also served as a venue for famous events such as the Okinawa International Film Festival, is likely to become a beloved new landmark.

3-4. Nirai Kanai Bridge

Nirai Kanai Bridge is famous as a scenic spot in the south.
This bridge is called Nirai-Kanai Bridge because it combines the Nirai Bridge and the Kanai Bridge.
From the bridge, you can not only enjoy a panoramic view of the cobalt blue sea, but also see Kudaka Island and Komaka Island, allowing you to experience a beauty that is beyond words.

Among the many sacred sites (utaki) in Okinawa, Seifa Utaki is considered the most sacred site of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It is said to be one of the seven sacred sites created by Amamikiyo, the goddess of the land, during the Ryukyu Kingdom era. It was registered on the World Heritage List in December 2000.

Gangara Valley is a mysterious valley where forests and limestone caves coexist.
Because numerous archaeological sites have been discovered there, it is attracting attention not only from tourists but also from scholars in various fields.
Please note that access to this valley is only available through tours, and you will be accompanied by a professional guide.

In this vibrant forest, you'll encounter countless creatures and thriving trees, culminating in a breathtaking view of the Ufshugajumaru, known as the wise man of the forest! You'll likely never encounter such an impressive banyan tree anywhere else.
There's a cafe at the entrance that's housed in the cave itself, so you can cool off and savor the atmosphere.

Ryukyu Village is an experiential facility offering a wide variety of programs related to Okinawan culture and crafts.

Children can play with traditional toys that are rarely played with these days, such as stilts and pine cones, making it a valuable experience for them.

Southeast Botanical Gardens is a place where you can encounter the nature and plants of southern countries.

With unique species and a variety of hands-on activities available, this is a place where you'll want to spend a whole day. In particular, the guided tours are highly recommended, as they explain things so clearly that you'll be able to talk about plants you didn't know before.

There's also an animal petting area, so your children won't get bored!

3-11. Nakijin Castle Ruins

Nakijin Castle Ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was a royal residence that existed even before the establishment of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Boasting a scale almost identical to Shuri Castle, the castle's intricate structure and stone walls create a magnificent spectacle.

The breathtaking view from the very top is also a major attraction, with the beautiful sea and the magnificent curve reminiscent of the Great Wall of China.
For those who want to learn more about the ancient history, a guided tour is recommended.

It is also known as a famous spot for cherry blossoms, and the contrast between the illuminated cherry blossoms and the castle during the season is magnificent.

3-12. Cape Hedo

Cape Hedo is located at the northernmost point of Okinawa Island.
Although it's a cliff that withstands rough waves, Cape Hedo offers truly beautiful views of the sea and the horizon stretching out below.

Also, on a clear day, you can see Izenajima, Iheyajima, Okinoerabujima, and Yoronjima in Kagoshima Prefecture.
This site, which was once a base for the return of Okinawa to Japan, now has monuments commemorating the return to Japan and a monument celebrating friendship between Okinawa and Yoron Island.

Also, as a somewhat unusual object, there is a statue of the Okinawa Rail, a flightless bird designated as a national natural monument. It is located on the south side of the cape, above Usahama Beach, so be sure to look for it.

3-13. Hatena Beach

Hatenohama Beach on Kumejima Island is said to be the most beautiful beach in East Asia.
It's an uninhabited island naturally formed by rising coral reefs, and the three sandy beaches together are called Hatenohama.

Because the water is shallow and suitable for snorkeling, many tourists visit during the season, but I recommend taking a tour.
There are landing tours and snorkeling tours that include lunch, so it's best to take advantage of those.

Diving is also very popular, and even those without a license can participate in a trial lesson. It's an island that everyone wants to visit again.

3-14. Higashi-Hennazaki

Higashi-Hennazaki, the easternmost point of Miyako Island, is attractive for its landscape of uplifted coral reef limestone formations jutting out into the sea. You can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the approximately 2-kilometer path while admiring the seasonal flowers and plants.

It's a rare location where the Pacific Ocean is on the right and the East China Sea is on the left, with the cape in the middle, and its breathtaking scenery has earned it a place among Japan's 100 most beautiful landscapes.

If you want to take a photo of the whole scene, I recommend the observation deck a short walk up the path with the cape behind you.
There is also an observation deck at the tip of the cape, which you can climb up to.

3-15. Irabu Bridge

The long-awaited bridge connecting Miyako Island and Irabu Island opened in January 2015. That bridge is the Irabu Bridge.
Freed from the unreliable constraints of sea traffic, it has become Japan's longest free bridge, easily accessible by car.

For tourists, the 3,540-meter length is actually a welcome feature. Incidentally, this length also has a hidden wordplay: "san (3) go (5) no shi (4) ma (0)" = "sango no shima" (coral island).

This bridge allows you to fully enjoy the luxury of simply driving over the exceptionally clear waters of Miyako Island.

3-16. Yonaha Maehama Beach

Yonaha Maehama Beach is said to be a must-visit spot if you come to Miyako Island.
The beach stretches for approximately 7 kilometers, so beautiful that you might think you're in paradise.

The untouched natural sandy beach is pure white. Upon closer inspection, you can see many bleached corals and seashells, but there is hardly any trash.

The marine activities are also excellent, and just looking at things like jet skiing and banana boating is exciting.
Also, the beach is relatively quiet until around 9 AM, so it's a great opportunity for a leisurely beachcombing session.

3-17. Kabira Bay

Kabira Bay on Ishigaki Island is designated as a national scenic spot and is a popular national park.
The scenery changes beautifully depending on the time of day and weather, making it a must-see spot when visiting Ishigaki.

Although swimming is prohibited, it is possible to view the beautiful scenery from a glass-bottom boat.
If you go out during the transition from low tide to high tide, you can watch the fish population increase dramatically.

Also, at low tide, the coral reefs are exposed, creating a beautiful landscape that you wouldn't normally see.
The ever-changing scenery of Kabira Bay is a must-see.
