Get cheap flights to Okinawa! We've compared LCC fares by route [departing from Tokyo, Kansai, Chubu, and Fukuoka]

Okinawa LCC imageFor those who want to travel to Okinawa on a budget, low-cost carriers (LCCs) are becoming the standard choice.

LCC (Low-Cost Carrier) refers to low-cost airlines that have lowered their regular fares by implementing thorough efficiency measures, such as eliminating or charging for free services and simplifying in-flight amenities.

With Peach Aviation launching in 2012, followed by Jetstar Japan, Vanilla Air, and others, the airline industry has entered a "price war"!

This time, for those who know it's cheap but haven't used it yet, we'll examine just how much you can save on routes departing from Tokyo, Kansai, Chubu, and Fukuoka. (※Information is as of August 2015)

Summary

1. Travel from Tokyo to Okinawa by low-cost carrier (LCC).

Part 1: What kinds of airlines are there?

Haneda Airport is the main hub for domestic flights in Tokyo, but LCCs (low-cost carriers) do not operate routes from Haneda to Naha Airport. All flights depart from and arrive at Narita Airport. While Narita Airport may be strongly associated with international flights, increased competition due to the internationalization of Haneda Airport has led to stagnant growth in international passenger numbers, prompting it to focus more on domestic flights. This is why it is actively utilizing LCCs.

The low-cost carriers (LCCs) that operate routes between Narita Airport and Naha Airport are Jetstar and Vanilla Air.

Part 2: How much does it cost?

Let's take a look at the prices for Jetstar and Vanilla Air.

Okinawa LCC Price Comparison Chart

Vanilla Air is doing a pretty good job with its regular fares. However, Jetstar has a "lowest price guarantee," which means that "if you find a cheaper fare from another airline at the same time, Jetstar will sell Jetstar flights at a 10% discount off that airline's fare." It seems you just need to call Jetstar's call center and tell them which website is selling flights cheaper than Jetstar's. Check the Jetstar website for terms and conditions of use.

Part 3: What is the price difference compared to existing airlines?

Okinawa LCCNext, we'll compare prices, including those of existing airlines, for different booking dates (7 days, 21 days, and 60 days prior) to see how much the prices actually differ at each stage.

In conclusion, the closer it gets to departure time, the wider the price difference between LCCs and established airlines becomes, and if you book 60 days in advance, established airlines are also quite cheap. Incidentally, Skymark's "Ima-Toku" (Now Discount) 21 days in advance has a price range that fluctuates depending on the number of remaining seats and the number of days remaining, and is actually cheaper than booking 60 days in advance. Occasionally it can even be cheaper than LCCs, so it's worth checking.

Note that LCCs (low-cost carriers) often hold sales from time to time, and prices can be significantly lower than this. So, if you're looking for the cheapest option, be sure to subscribe to newsletters from various airlines and keep checking them regularly.

2. Traveling from Kansai to Okinawa by LCC (Low-Cost Carrier)

Part 1: What kinds of airlines are there?

Okinawa LCCWhen it comes to low-cost carriers (LCCs) based at Kansai International Airport, Peach is a familiar name. Peach was the first airline in Japan to launch a full-fledged LCC service. Now, it continues to expand its routes from Kansai Airport to destinations such as Sapporo, Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, and Okinawa. Jetstar also operates a route between Kansai Airport and Naha Airport.

Part 2: How much does it cost?

Let's take a look at the prices offered by Peach and Jetstar.

Okinawa LCC Price Comparison Chart

They're roughly the same, so you can book based on convenience and preference. At Kansai Airport, Terminal 2 is dedicated to LCCs, with Peach flights departing and arriving there, but Jetstar flights depart from Terminal 1, the same terminal as ANA and JAL. This means you don't have to go to the distant dedicated terminal, saving you a little time.

On the other hand, Peach offers a service called "Space Option." This allows passengers to use the space next to them if it's empty (reservations required). This seems like a great option for mothers with babies, as it provides more space.

Part 3: What is the price difference compared to existing airlines?

Next, we'll compare prices, including those of existing airlines, for different booking dates (7 days, 21 days, and 60 days prior) to see how much the prices actually differ at each stage.

While the fares of the two LCCs vary depending on the date, there isn't a huge difference. Peach frequently holds campaigns that make fares even cheaper, so it might be a good idea to check them out. Jetstar is popular for its aforementioned "lowest price guarantee" and the sale of original merchandise on board.

Also, don't overlook the fact that SkyMark's last-minute "Ima-Toku" (immediate discount) offers are incredibly cheap. It's especially worth checking if you're booking close to your departure date.

Furthermore, while there are differences compared to LCCs, ANA and JAL offer significantly cheaper fares when booking 60 days in advance. Considering mileage, baggage restrictions, seat selection, and peace of mind, ANA and JAL might actually be the better deal.

3. Traveling to Okinawa from Chubu/Nagoya by LCC

Part 1: What kinds of airlines are there?

Okinawa LCCOn March 29th of this year, Jetstar Japan launched its first low-cost carrier (LCC) route from Chubu Centrair International Airport to Naha. While currently operating only one round trip daily, the airline has announced plans to actively market within the Nagoya area, making an increase in routes highly likely.

Part 2: How much does it cost?

Unfortunately, we can't make a comparison because there are no other LCCs operating this route, but let's take a look at Jetstar's prices.

Okinawa LCC Price Comparison Chart

There's only one flight a day, so it's first come, first served. They also held a huge fare sale when they first started operations (Chubu Central Airport to Naha Airport for as low as 3,990 yen!!!), so keep an eye out for future offers.

Part 3: What is the price difference compared to existing airlines?

Next, we'll compare prices, including those of existing airlines, for different booking dates (7 days, 21 days, and 60 days prior) to see how much the prices actually differ at each stage.

It's clear that Jetstar and Skymark are in fierce competition. If Skymark has their "Ima-toku" (immediate discount) slots available, Skymark is the better deal. However, if you have plenty of time before departure, such as 60 days in advance, Jetstar is the better option.

Furthermore, while ANA and JAL Group's prices become quite similar when booking 60 days in advance, their cheaper flights depart in the afternoon, while Jetstar and Skymark's flights depart in the morning. Therefore, if price is the primary factor in the comparison, ANA and JAL Group cannot compete.

4. Travel from Fukuoka to Okinawa by LCC (low-cost carrier).

Part 1: What kinds of airlines are there?

Okinawa LCCPeach Airlines began operating flights between Fukuoka Airport and Naha Airport last year. They use Terminal 1 at Fukuoka Airport, and a dedicated shuttle bus takes passengers to the LCC terminal at Naha Airport. However, the terminal is a converted former logistics warehouse, so it's rather simple. There is a small souvenir shop, but the selection of goods is limited.

Okinawa LCCUntil September 3rd, there was only one flight per day, departing Fukuoka at 8:15 PM (with a convenient return departure from Naha at 5:50 PM). However, from September 4th, there will be two round trips per day, making it much more convenient to use, which is another attractive feature.

Part 2: How much does it cost?

Unfortunately, we can't make a comparison because there are no other LCCs operating this route, but let's take a look at Peach's prices.

Okinawa LCC Price Comparison Chart

With Peach, you can find domestic flights for under ¥5,000 at the lowest prices. During sales, you can even find routes for around ¥2,000! These prices are truly amazing.

Part 3: What is the price difference compared to existing airlines?

Next, we'll compare prices, including those of existing airlines, for different booking dates (7 days, 21 days, and 60 days prior) to see how much the prices actually differ at each stage.

A quick comparison of the cheapest fares across all airlines clearly shows that Peach is the most affordable. The cabin is a little cramped, but the seats are clean and made of leather, and the in-flight meals, though extra, are quite substantial. However, very few people order in-flight meals on these short-haul domestic flights, so if you do, the smell might be a bit bothersome to those around you.

5. Don't forget to compare it with domestic package tours.

Now, above we've compared LCCs and established airlines when it comes to purchasing airline tickets, but what if you're using round-trip tickets and also staying in a hotel at your destination?
Don't forget to compare it with package tours sold by travel agencies and airlines.

Using major airlines like ANA and JAL, you can find round-trip flights and hotel accommodation (with some perks) from Tokyo, Kansai, Nagoya, and Fukuoka starting from around 2 yen (prices vary depending on the season). These package tours can be purchased up to 7 days before departure, making them especially useful when airfares are high at the last minute.

Be sure to compare prices on each travel agency's website or price comparison site.

6. Things to be aware of when using LCCs

Low-cost carriers (LCCs) are primarily known for their low fares, but if the quality is poor, it can ruin your trip. Here's a summary of points to keep in mind when using LCCs compared to traditional airlines.

Checked baggage and in-flight meals are almost always extra charges!

Most low-cost carriers (LCCs) do not include baggage fees in their base fares. If you need to check in luggage, be sure to request it online when you book your flight. Checking in luggage at the airport can be significantly more expensive, so be aware of this.

In addition, in-flight meals, drinks, blankets, and in-flight entertainment such as movies are all subject to an extra charge. If you want to use these services, you should check the prices in advance, otherwise you might end up thinking, "In the end, it cost me this much money."

○If your flight is cancelled, you must figure things out on your own!

For example, if a flight is canceled due to equipment failure, established airlines will not only rebook you on another airline's flight on the same day, but some will also cover accommodation and meals. However, with low-cost carriers (LCCs), even if the cancellation is clearly the airline's fault, they will only rebook you on an available flight on the following day or later. You will often have to find a hotel yourself and pay for it yourself, so you should assume that you will basically have to overcome any problems on your own.

〇Strict about boarding times!

Low-cost carriers (LCCs) use shuttle flights to cut costs. Because the time spent at the airport is short, boarding times are strictly enforced. Moreover, the deadlines are merciless! Jetstar, in particular, is very punctual, and there are reports of passengers being left behind without a ticket.

〇And there are a lot of delays too!

Shuttle service means that low-cost carriers (LCCs) are operating with the same aircraft. This means that if there is a delay on the first flight, it can cause a chain reaction of delays, which is a terrible situation. In the worst case, it could even lead to the cancellation of the last flight.

Children aged 2 and over are charged the same price as adults!

While established airlines charge children aged 3 and older, typically at about 50% of the adult fare, low-cost carriers (LCCs) charge the same fare as adults from the age of 2. This is something to keep in mind when planning your trip. Also, the seats are narrower, so traveling with infants on an LCC might be a bit challenging.

Summary

It's important to note that while many aspects might seem like disadvantages at first glance, the incredibly low fares are a huge advantage that more than compensates for these drawbacks. Wouldn't it be great if you could just casually go for some Okinawan soba on the weekend, provided you have the energy? LCCs are undoubtedly changing the way we travel. When planning your next trip, be sure to check out LCC websites!
