While Okinawan specialties like Soki Soba and Goya Champuru are great, sometimes I just crave curry.
Curry is so popular in Okinawa that a curry grand prix has been held there every year since 2014, and in fact, there are many famous curry restaurants all over the prefecture.
This time, we've carefully selected four incredibly delicious curry restaurants located in Naha City, which boasts excellent accessibility!
We will introduce a variety of curries from different genres, including authentic spice curries made with a blend of multiple spices, Western-style curries, and soup curries.
<Table of Contents>
1. "Spice Curry Gokarna," a restaurant specializing in authentic Indian curry.
2. A hearty soup curry at "Ajitoya Shuri Castle Branch"
3. A new type of spicy curry: "Yamana Curry Annex"
4. A hearty Western-style curry at "Shokudo Nuji Bonbon Z"
1. "Spice Curry Gokarna," a restaurant specializing in authentic Indian curry.
The first up is "Spice Curry Gokarna".
This restaurant primarily serves Indian curry, and their most popular dish is the special butter chicken curry (700 yen including tax).
I'd like to introduce some of our popular menu items to those of you reading this article... I really do...
I hesitated for a while, but I couldn't resist the temptation of my favorite spinach and chicken curry (800 yen including tax), so I ordered it.
I often order spinach and chicken curry at various Indian restaurants, but the spinach is usually in paste form, so it only provides a hint of flavor.
However, this one had plenty of chopped spinach in it, and the flavor and aroma of the ingredients really came through!
The curry sauce itself is not just an ordinary Indian curry; it has a deep flavor from a blend of spices and is very mild.
The spice blend, which made me wonder if it was adapted for Japanese tastes, was so delicious that I wanted to come back and eat it again and again.
"Spice Curry Gokarna" is located along the main street, about a 10-minute walk from Kencho Station on the Yui Rail.
It has an inviting, cafe-like exterior and is equipped with both counter and table seating.
We had a wide range of customers, including office workers and students.
Here's what the menu looks like.
They have a full range of meat options, including chicken, pork, and beef, and their vegetable selection is also extensive.
A normal serving of rice is 200g, which is equivalent to one bowl.
In addition to free extra-large portions, they also offer a half-size option for the butter chicken curry, which is a nice bonus.
The monthly special curry is:Shop blogYou can check it out there, so be sure to take a look!

2. A hearty soup curry at "Ajitoya Shuri Castle Branch"
The second restaurant I'd like to introduce is "Ajitoya," which is famous for its soup curry.
The soup is light and refreshing, and it's packed with lots of ingredients. There are so many different kinds of ingredients on the menu, it's hard to choose!
This time, I ordered the Ajitoya Grilled Chicken Curry, which is said to be their most popular dish. The chicken on top of the rice is dazzling! (shining)
This chicken is simmered before being fried, so it's incredibly crispy yet surprisingly juicy and tender.
The curry is flavorful with spices, offering a refreshing yet rich taste, making it a satisfying meal even when paired with rice.
You can choose the spiciness level from 0 to 100 (51 and above cost an extra 50 yen), so it can be finely adjusted to suit everyone, from those who don't like spicy food to those who do.
They recommend between 20 and 35. You can have one free refill of rice.
This time I visited the Shuri Castle store, which is about a 10-minute walk from Shuri Station on the Yui Rail, but there are three other stores as well: Chatan store, Awase store, and Shuri Castle store.
Located right in the middle of a residential area, the shop has only table seating and a cafe-like atmosphere.
They also have picture books, and there were families there when I visited.
The menu is the same at all locations.
In addition to their signature soup curry, they also offer five different types of keema curry.
Using locally sourced ingredients is one of their selling points.
You can also order Okinawan-style dishes such as island pork sausage curry (1050 yen including tax) and boiled yushi tofu curry (880 yen including tax).
It might be a good idea to visit it while you're sightseeing at Shuri Castle!

3. A new type of spicy curry: "Yamana Curry Annex"
The third restaurant I'd like to introduce, "Yamanaka Curry Annex," basically offers two types of curry that change weekly.
For those with a big appetite, we recommend the Nimori curry, which features a half-and-half serving of two different curries.
There are also two side dishes, which are versatile and can be eaten as a palate cleanser between bites of curry or mixed in as a topping to add flavor to the curry.
The price is also very reasonable at just 50 yen including tax.
I ordered two servings, including a side dish.
The top picture shows coconut tomato curry, and the bottom picture shows flavorful chicken curry.
The chicken curry is a truly authentic curry, much spicier than it looks. It's not just spicy; the aroma of multiple spices is prominent, sure to satisfy even the most discerning curry connoisseur!
The coconut tomato curry has a sweetness to it, as you'd expect from the coconut, so eating it alternately with the spicy chicken curry seemed to bring out the best in both of them.
Yamanaka Curry Bettei, which offers this new kind of spicy curry, is a brand new restaurant that just opened in July 2017.
Located about a 10-minute walk from Yui Rail Miebashi Station, this shop is close to the business district and features a counter-only layout.
Actually, this restaurant was opened by a chef who trained at Gokarna, which we introduced in the previous section, and it's already gaining popularity for its authentic flavors.
Curry fans are sure to be thrilled to see the owner seriously preparing each curry to order (lol).
Here's what the menu looks like.
This was the lineup when I visited.
However, as mentioned earlier, the menu changes weekly, so what you can eat will be a surprise until you visit!

4. A hearty Western-style curry at "Shokudo Nuji Bonbon Z"
The grand finale is "Shokudo Nuji Bonbon Z," whose two main specialties are hamburgers and curry.
The European-style black curry, simmered using locally produced Wagyu beef, has won multiple awards at the curry grand prix mentioned at the beginning.
I was also tempted by their signature cheese-baked curry (850 yen including tax), but as a big fan of fried shrimp, I ordered the fried shrimp curry (900 yen including tax).
Here it is.
It's a luxury to get three fried shrimp for only 900 yen including tax!
It's wonderfully crispy and satisfying, and the sauce has a deep, rich flavor reminiscent of a stew simmered slowly in a Western-style restaurant.
You can order the spiciness level from 1 to 10, so both those who like spicy food and those who don't can enjoy it with peace of mind.
For lunch, all curry dishes (except mini curries) come with a delicious salad.
"Shokudo Nujibonbon Z" is about a 10-minute walk from Kencho-mae Station on the Yui Rail.
This shop, resembling an old Japanese house, stands alone in a quiet area.
You take off your shoes before entering the restaurant, and you can enjoy your curry at a table in a relaxed atmosphere that feels like home.
Unfortunately, I completely forgot to take pictures of the menu...
Tabelog's websiteThey say it's all listed there, so please check it out.
With a wide variety of toppings available, including fried oysters and minced meat cutlets, you're sure to discover a new curry dish every time you visit!
