Things to know when enjoying swimming in the sea in Okinawa in spring

846db01ac66c5adb12949337a587fb4c_s
Now, let me introduce some things that people who want to enjoy swimming in the sea in spring are probably wondering about!

What's the temperature like? Is it cold?

Now, when it comes to swimming during the official opening of the swimming season, the temperature is naturally a major concern, isn't it?

According to data from the Japan Meteorological Agency, the average temperatures are as follows:
* "Average" refers to the average daytime temperature, and "Maximum" refers to the average daytime maximum temperature.
March
Early: Average 17.7℃ Maximum 20.4℃
Mid-Average 19.1℃ Maximum 21.9℃
Late average 19.9℃ maximum 22.7℃
April
Early: Average 20.5℃ Maximum 23.3℃
Mid-Average 21.2℃ Maximum 24.0℃
Late average 22.4℃ maximum 25.1℃

So, looking at the daytime high temperature, it's 22.7℃ in late March, but this figure is the average temperature including rainy days, so on sunny days, there are many days when the temperature exceeds 25℃, which is considered a summer day.

So, if it's a sunny day from late March onwards, wouldn't it be okay to go swimming?

However, very few locals, other than children, swim here. Most of the visitors are tourists who want to swim in Okinawa!

Also, cloudy and rainy days are too cold for swimming, so it's best to give up on swimming on those days.

What's the difference between before and after the official opening of the swimming season?

One of the main differences between before and after the official opening of the swimming season is whether or not there are lifeguards present.

Before the official opening of the swimming season, there are often no lifeguards, so it's best to refrain from swimming for safety reasons. However, even after the official opening, lifeguards aren't always present at all beaches.

Also, before the official opening of the swimming season, shops, showers, and even toilets may not be open (depending on the beach). Generally speaking, it's best to avoid swimming before the official opening.

What are the nets in the ocean?

Many people will notice that many of the beaches in Okinawa are surrounded by buoy-like structures. These are called "box jellyfish nets" and they protect you from dangerous creatures.

kurage-net-imageA net has been stretched over the buoy in the photo above to prevent box jellyfish from entering.

Box jellyfish are generally said to appear around June, but swimming outside the box jellyfish netting area is prohibited, so please refrain from swimming there. See below for more details.

For more information on the dangers of box jellyfish and precautions, please see below.

*This information about the box jellyfish is from the Tomigusuku City website.

So, that concludes our information on the opening of the beaches on Okinawa Island in 2023! The seas of Okinawa may still be a little chilly on some days in March and April, but the rainy season will begin in May. Why not enjoy the Okinawan sea while the weather is still stable?
