Kibogaoka Beach

Kibogaoka Beach is a hidden gem of a natural beach located in Onna Village, in the central-northern part of the main island.
Onna Village, a resort area, is one of the most popular tourist destinations on Okinawa Island, but Kibogaoka Beach is less crowded, and if you're lucky, you might even have it all to yourself on a weekday.
We'll introduce you to a hidden gem of a beach where you can even have a BBQ.

1. This is what Kibogaoka Beach is like.

Kibogaoka Beach
Descending the vegetated stairs from the parking lot along National Route 58 (Onna Sunset Kaido), a vast horizon unfolds before your eyes. The sandy beach stretches for approximately 150 meters. The pure white sand is free of stones, and the sea is crystal clear. The wide emerald green inner reef intersects with the deep blue of the outer reef, creating a mystical scene that will instantly captivate your attention. Who would have thought such a place existed along a national highway?

I visited in November, and I occasionally saw people swimming.
Kibogaoka Beach
Because it's a natural beach, there are no lifeguards, marine activity facilities, toilets, showers, or any other amenities for swimming. However, some people enjoy using their own SUPs and snorkeling gear.

Okinawa Prefecture boasts numerous beaches, but surprisingly few allow barbecues with charcoal or camping. Kibogaoka Beach, however, allows you to bring your own charcoal and enjoy barbecues and camping.
I also went barbecuing with my friends. The food tasted amazing while we ate with the crystal-clear sea in front of us and listening to the soothing sound of the waves. We ate every last bite.
Kibogaoka Beach
The waves are calm, so it's also recommended for camping.

Please remember to take your trash home with you.

On a clear day, you can see Sesoko Island and Ie Island on the horizon.

The evenings are cooler, and the sunset is absolutely beautiful and refreshing while listening to the sound of the waves.
The number of visitors suddenly increases during this time. Sunsets can be seen all year round, so it's a great option for a winter trip to Okinawa.

2. Access and Parking for Kibogaoka Beach

Kibogaoka Beach is adjacent to the beach of the luxury resort "Halekulani Okinawa," and there is a parking lot across from the Irabu Kibogaoka Entrance (towards Naha) bus stop on National Route 58.

This sign is the landmark. There is parking space for 7 cars.
Kibogaoka Beach
Because Kibogaoka Beach is not very well known, it is relatively uncrowded on weekdays. However, on weekends, it attracts beach lovers, and the parking lot can become completely full.

Once you've parked your car, it's time to head to the beach! Be careful, as the stairs leading down to the shore are a bit steep.
Kibogaoka Beach
Once you reach the bottom, as you can see, a cobalt blue sea stretches out before you.
Kibogaoka Beach
This is the Okinawan sea!! The water is incredibly clear and transparent.
You wouldn't imagine there's such a beautiful beach right below the side of the road, would you?
Kibogaoka Beach
Naturally, there are no beach huts or anything like that, but there is a convenience store a 5-minute walk away.

3. Precautions when snorkeling

Kibogaoka Beach is a snorkeling spot where you can see tropical fish in coral reefs located a short distance from the shore. However, as mentioned before, there are no lifeguards, and there have been instances of drowning accidents in the past. The currents are strong outside the reef, so please enjoy yourself inside the reef. Safety first (if you don't know where the reef is, don't go!).

Final thoughts

This secluded beach is quiet and peaceful, with exceptionally clear water. If you want to experience the Okinawan sea in a private setting, be sure to visit Kibogaoka Beach.
So, why don't you go and explore the hidden gems of the main island?
