First up is the classic Kabira Bay! This view, often seen in photos of Ishigaki Island, can be enjoyed from the observation deck located within Kabira Park.
The sea around Kabira Bay changes color depending on the time of day and the weather. Many tourists visit every day to catch a glimpse of this beautiful scenery.

The boat we took this time was a glass-bottom boat operated by Kawahira Marine Service. The bottom of the boat is made of glass, allowing you to observe the underwater world!
The staff driving the boat will point out unusual coral reef spots and introduce you to the fish swimming around.

On this day, we were able to see a stingray, a sea snake, and three sea turtles!
Since the creatures you see will be different each time, it's a surprise what kind of animals you'll encounter.

1-3. Let's go to Hirakubo Cape Lighthouse, at the very edge of Ishigaki Island.

If you continue straight north, past grasslands where cattle graze, you will arrive at Hirakubo Cape Lighthouse, the northernmost point of Ishigaki Island.
Behind the lighthouse, a beautiful ocean stretches out, creating a truly picturesque and breathtaking view!
Apparently, on clear days, you can see Tarama Island across the sea.

Also, if you climb the small hill nearby, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Hirakubo Peninsula!
Because it's a cape, the sea breeze is strong, but it boasts some of the most beautiful ocean views on Ishigaki Island, so be sure to make the trip all the way to the northernmost point!

1-4. Enjoy a mini-adventure in a limestone cave!

The Sabichi Limestone Cave, located in Ibaruma in the northern part of Ishigaki Island, is said to have been formed approximately 370 million years ago by the uplift of the seabed.

As you look around inside, you can see strangely shaped stalactites and pots that were used in the past to salt and store pork.
You can enjoy the exciting feeling of being on an adventure!

And once you emerge from the cave, a cobalt blue sea stretches out before you. This is the only cave in Japan that leads directly to the sea, making it extremely rare.

The inside of the cave is cool and refreshing, making it a great place to stay cool even in the summer!

1-6. Learning about the night sky at Ishigaki Island Astronomical Observatory

Located at 24 degrees north latitude, Ishigaki Island and the Yaeyama region are less affected by the jet stream and have a stable atmosphere, making them the best places in Japan to see the most stars.

At the Ishigaki Island Astronomical Observatory, during the day you can view the latest 4D2U, a 4-dimensional digital universe developed by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, using 3D glasses.
On weekend and public holiday evenings, they hold stargazing events where you can clearly see stars in the far reaches of space and even planets in our solar system using the Murikabushi Telescope, one of the largest telescopes in Kyushu and Okinawa!

Incidentally, "Murikabushi" is the word for Subaru in the Yaeyama Islands dialect.

Also, the Southern Cross can only be seen in Japan from the Yaeyama Islands, so if you visit between late December and late June, you should definitely try to see it.

4. Things to keep in mind when enjoying solo travel

How will you get around?

Ishigaki Island is surprisingly large; it takes about three hours just to drive around it.
If you want to get around the island, traveling by car is the best option. Renting a car will give you the freedom to move around as you please!

You should pay particular attention if you are traveling by bus.
We recommend using the great value tickets available: a 1-day unlimited ride pass (¥1.000) and a 5-day unlimited ride pass (¥2.000)!

However, while there are many buses that circulate to the city center and the airport, there are not many buses that go to other places.
Also, outside of urban areas, you can wave your hand and a bus will stop even if it's not a designated bus stop!

Of course, if you tell the driver in advance where you want to get off, they will drop you off even if it's not a bus stop, so don't hesitate to ask.
The flexible approach unique to an island is truly impressive!

Please take care of yourself.

Traveling is fun and liberating, but self-management is essential when traveling alone.
Sometimes, when you're having fun, you might end up staying out late at night or taking your eyes off your belongings.
There's a small chance that your belongings could be stolen without you even noticing.

Also, since few guesthouses and inns have rooms that can be locked, always keep your valuables with you.

While traveling without a plan and going wherever you please is great, it's generally wise to have at least a basic plan in place.

It's essential to know in advance things like bus schedules, ferry times to remote islands, and the time it takes to get to the airport on your departure day—anything you'd be in trouble if you missed!

It's disappointing when you want to see the beautiful ocean but end up going at low tide...
Knowing the tides beforehand might help you see the scenery you're hoping for!
